Grace and Peace,

Why do we have different traditions concerning Unleavened and Leavened Bread?

In case you haven’t already seen them, there have been several threads in this forum where this issue has been discussed. One such is [thread=200712]here[/thread] and another [thread=253386]here[/thread].

Because we have different traditions concerning Leavened and Unleavened bread.

Bread had a meaning. It is the substance of the body and knowledge of the mind. Puffed up bread, leavened, refers to the softer, more palatable form of truth and substance whereas the unleavened bread from Moses’ days refers to the dry, cold facts void of “a lot of hot air”.

There is a similar difference between Ahdam and Eve.

I really like the parables, which I know doesn’t make me special. I read a commentary once about the parable of the leavened bread. Amongst other interesting points, the author, whose name escapes me, mentioned that to the Jews of Christ’s time, yeast was seen as corrupt. They made yeast by taking a small amount of bread and hiding it under a bowl in a dank place. The bread rotted untill all that was left was the yeast. So, yeast was seen as basically a necessary evil. Leavened bread fed more people. So, IMHO, the unleavened bread represents Faith and obedience to God pure and uncompromised by the worrys of everyday life. Faith untouched by the vanity and self reliance that distract us from Gods true authority. The leavened bread is the more common form of Faith. It’s valuable and important and feeds many, but it’s at least a little corrupted. Corrupted by the worrys about where we live; what will we eat; what will we wear, etc, that intrude in everyday life. We can hardly ignore them and God knows them all too well and is forgiving of them, I think. Faith corrupted by our vanity in thinking that we know better and understand the mind of God so much better than anyone else. The vanity of righteousness that makes look down our nose on those we perceive more sinful than ourselves. The vanity of placing burdens on our fellow Christians while ignoring the true value of mercy and love. But, I could be wrong

Leavened bread is evocative of the Resurrection as it rises. Leaven is also mentioned in several places in Scripture. Unleavened bread was, of course, mentioned first in Exodus and has an important place in the Jewish .

The changing from unleavened to leavened bread in the early Church was also considered a physical sign of the transition from the Old to the New Covenant.

Normally the shewbread was unleavened, but on Pentecost, LEAVENED bread was used.

Also, the prayer of the matzoh is, “This is the bread of affliction which our fathers ate in Egypt.”

The Eucharist is the bread of Freedom in the New Kingdom of Christ.
