I go through Twitter, and see that Charles Manson has passed away. Now Charlie did some pretty screwed- up stuff, back in the day–people died.

If you ever read about the beliefs he instilled in his “family,” you’ll know that there was probably a screw(s) loose, and he was pretty messed up. But nonetheless, I’m going to go against the Twitter tide, and ask you to say a small prayer that our merciful God have mercy on him.

So yes, please pray for the repose of Charles Manson…

The Gospel of life that Christ revealed (which St. John Paul beautifully discusses in Evangelium Vitae) reveals that every human being has a God-given dignity.

That is why we have prison ministries and such.

Also God loves us unconditionally and calls us to do likewise. He does not love the righteous more than the sinner. Perhaps the opposite is true, since God so loved the world that He sent His only-begotten son or as the Liturgy states, in justice he condemned us, in mercy he redeemed us. And while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

St Moses of Egypt was a brigand and a murderer. He became a holy monk after his conversion.

Also there is the story of Brother Jim Townsend (there is a beautiful biography called “The Prisoner”). Imprisoned for decades for murder, he converted, joined the Capuchin Franciscans, and turned around the lives of countless prisoners, “thugs”, and prostitutes through his outreach ministries and talks.

We do not know what is in a man’s mind. We cannot judge, only God is judge. We can surely judge actions, but not souls. While Charles Milles Maddox committed actions that were monstrious and gravely sinful, it is a grave sin to call him “monster” or say he is “rotting in hell”.

We are bound by Christian charity to pray for his conversion and for the repose of his soul. God only knows if he ever repented or drew closer to Him, or what happened during those final hours when he was terminally ill.

The 2012 parole board noted that he had several mental health issues, no insight into the causative factors of the crimes, and lacked understanding of the magnitude of the crimes. God only knows if his mental sanity reduced his moral culpability. A soul in a broken body is hardly rejecting God. In fact, it may have been crying to God while the mind acted in a deranged way.

We are also called to understand that situations affect men. This man had a very very troubled youth. He never met his father, and his mother was an alcoholic. She ended up in jail, and he lived with relatives, then escaped a foster home to go back to his mother, who rejected him. It was downhill from there. Not even a teenager, he became a thief and landed in several juvenile centers, in one of which he was sexually abused. He had 4 years of schooling and was illiterate. He went from crime to crime, from prison to prison, through several marriages, fathering several children. Then in the late 60’s the major crimes happened, and he’s been in jail ever since.

That is no justification for what he did, but minds do break down when they undergo very difficult life situations. That’s why we have gang ministries, youth outreach of all kinds, and so forth. There are places where people don’t even experience childhood, only abuse and violence, until they themselves become violent. So this man embraced a different kind of violence and had a spotlight, but there are many out there, taking lives. Are we praying for them? What are we doing to help them change?

May this man’s life and death be a call to reach out to the peripheries to prevent others from following similar destructive paths.

Good idea. Do not pass judgement on him or let your mind dwell on his evil acts.

Let us pray: May his soul, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Pray also for those he murdered. May their souls, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.

Pray for our world which is disfigured by evil. O Lord, protect us from evil, provide for our spiritual needs, and lead us and all your children toward faith, hope, and love.
