i am attending a Adult confirmation class at my parish. Today was the first day of the confirmation class and the man that was asked to teach i find is unqualified. he is a very kind man but he is unsure of even the real purpose of conformation. He said he thought it was like how a bar mitzvah is for the jewish religion, like a initiation into adult hood. He talked about what he hopes to teach about and that he hopes to read from the bible but he uses a Lutheran bible because he likes it better. uhhhh i was completely shocked! this is who will be teaching these adults? i asked him if he maybe needed an extra teacher that my father who was a teacher before was very interested but he didn’t seem to want help… i don’t wana kick him out but i do not find it is wise for him to be doing it… idk what to do. should i write an anonymous letter to the parish office?

Why be anonymous? If you have valid concerns, make an appointment with the priest and privately and respectfully discuss them with him. If he can explain or rectify the situation, then you are all set. If not, then you have to decide if you can put up with it or if you should switch to another parish.

I agree - it is so hard sometimes to be the voice that needs to be heard. Be brave on behalf of those this person is instructing - they don’t know what they should be learning, but you do.
Praying for you that you will find the courage to make that appointment and see your pastor. Blessings

Agree. It will work better if you can provide a solution, your dad who is willing to help and has experience. At the very least, the pastor would let your father help.

Don’t know for sure, but the guy may be refusing outside help because he is intent on building an empire. If he was befuddled and knew it, he’d accept any help he could get. Bypass this guy and talk to the pastor. He would certainly allow another person to help the confirmation teacher. And once in the door, other people would be able to see who is the teacher of the faith. Your father could even correct him, tactfully, during the class, if necessary. People would quickly see who was in authority, when one teaches effectively in love.

Regards

A Catechist requires training in the topics and material being presented. I would speak with the pastor. The diocese most likely has qualifications for Catechists and usually offers training programs. This is why RCIA MUST be supproted by a TEAM of Catechists who can help and support each other.

. . . .and if the Pastor doesn’t fix the problem, contact the diocese/Bishop - that’s what they are there for . . . .

It is very good that you have noticed a problem. Maybe this fellow was the only one who volunteered their time for such an important task???

I suggest you and your father both respectfully discuss with your priest. Your dad can volunteer his service and you can tell your story.

Good luck and God Bless you.
