Unsure of attending a retreat

Lately I have been developing a devotion to Divine Mercy. Last week while leaving the local Catholic bookstore (run by the Daughters of St. Paul) I saw a flyer for an upcoming retreat put on by the Archdiocesan Apostolate of Divine Mercy.

Given my increase devotion I was thinking of going. However, at the bottom of the flyer it says that it will end with a service of liberation, healing of memories (sanación de recuerdos), and healing ministry.

Now I am not sure what to expect or if it is even a good idea to go to the retreat. I’ve never heard of any of these things before and it seems like part of the charismatic movement (nothing wrong with that, just not my particular charism).

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

If I were you I would go, for the reason that in my lifetime I had the privilege of attending a monthly day of prayer (Mass included) given by a Carmelite priest who was called off the mountain (so to speak) to give spiritual direction to priests, nuns, and laypeople interested in deeper prayer, including many in the Catholic charismatic renewal. He was very knowledgeable about the charismatic gifts and taught about them. He mostly taught us about the teachings on prayer of the Carmelite saints.

The charismatic gifts come from the Holy Spirit, and they are given to us for others. The gifts of the Holy Spirit at Confirmation are for us personally.

I am a senior, senior citizen, and have benefited much from his teachings, and from being in a charismatic prayer group for many years. I am a Third Order Lay Carmelite.

I lean toward the contemplative and mystic end of things, but I have many friends who are charismatic. It is not my thing, but I have spent quite a bit of time with them and have gained great appreciation for their practices. I’d say you have nothing to lose by going and may gain some new insights and experiences you would otherwise not have.

I have been around the Charismatic Renewal for 30-some years, and have never heard of a “service of liberation”. “Healing of memories” has not been traditionally associated with the Charismatic movement, and healing ministries have been part of the Church for millennia, although these days it is often associated with the Charismatic renewal. But healing is nothing new in Church history, and some saints had a gift of healing, and a healing ministry.

It seems that people label everything they never heard of before as “charismatic”. Why don’t you call the Archdiocese and ask? But if I were you, I would go. It might be a chance to learn more about different spiritualities in the Church and expand your horizons a little. I would welcome such an opportunity. And if it’s not for you, really, no harm done, and others may have benefitted, and if you run into someone whom these things might help, you will know where to direct them.

If it was me, I would ask my priest. I will not go blindly into a retreat or service again unless I pass it through his filter first. If it’s sanctioned by your diocese, give your priest feedback if you attend.
