I am an adolescent boy who has recently been struggling with impure thoughts. When one pops into my mind and I remember its wrong I reject it and try to get it out of my head (it’s hard cuz I get distracted easily and have a vivid imagination). But sometimes it’ll take me a minute to remember its a sin and as soon as I do I stop. I read that age can affect the gravity, and a few other things I fall under, but some additional help would be appreciated. P.S. I’ve read that “woman” in Matthew 5:28 can also be seen as meaning “another’s wife” so…

What matters is that once you realize you are lusting or having impure thoughts, you stop. We can not control our thoughts, some thoughts just come and go randomly. But we can control how we act after we get these thoughts. Keep fighting the good fight, it’s not easy but it’s worth it

It’s like I sorta take a sec to realize that I’m having thoughts that are bad but as soon as I remember that these are now bad (I learned this two weeks ago and before I knew this it was a habit), but as soon as I remember its bad I just try to stop

We can’t control our thoughts, as such we don’t have full consent of the will over our thoughts. We sin through deliberate actions, sin is a choice. Thoughts that randomly come aren’t choices. Intentionally dwelling on these thoughts though are a choice, so we have to be careful about that.

But don’t beat yourself up about it either. So many people your age struggle with impurity. Don’t focus on when you fall, focus on how you pick yourself back up. Great mercy in confession. Keep trying your best, this is what God asks of us, that we try our best and ask for forgiveness when we fall

So if I don’t realize I’m doing something bad but when I do I stop its not mortal? (side not: unless its INHERENTLy bad such as rap or murder).

@GospelOfMatthew Thank you btw I have been stressing about this my family isn’t overly religious but recently I’ve taken a step back to look at my life and I’m not completely happy w the choices I’ve made and kind people like you tend to really help.

Thank you so much I will try to get to these but an 8th grade schedule is quite crazy. Do u think that for now you could give me just a short answer on whether I have mortal sinned cuz its weird as when I figured out it was bad I stopped, and it was only for a few seconds. I am currently planning on going to a confession on saturday but I’m afraid of dying til then with a mortal sin. Also as I say it I realize that I wouldn’t say I indulge in these thoughts as much as I’m led in to them and don’t stop getting further and further distracted but I realize they’re bad and immediately try to stop. Once again, gracias mi amigo.

@GospelOfMatthew and please let me know soon my stress and anxiety issues are horrid. I don’t mean to be a bother cuz ik i ask many times but its just a weird issue of mine.

Given your anxiety issues, you really shouldn’t be asking questions about matters of conscience online. That will only further your anxiety, because it will throw you into a loop of reassurance seeking, where no answer will be good enough. Speak to your parents and to a priest about these matters.

To those who are replying, you aren’t helping matters, and you shouldn’t be speaking about these matters to someone who is underage. Please exercise prudence and some realism about what you’re capable of addressing.

thank you so much for taking the time to help me out. And I’m progressively attempting to work on these issues. I feel like me and lots of others get so caught up in trying to not do what the Lord said is bad when we need to focus more on doing what’s good.

You are on the right path in recognizing that it is a sin. Please do the following:

You must flee from sexual sin. When a thought comes in your mind immediately grab hold of it, stop it, take it no further, immediately focus/think a Holy thought. Focus on Jesus and his Holiness. You will find it is quite difficult for the human mind to focus on two things at once.

If you have not yet, with a sincere heart, ask Jesus to come into your Mind, Heart, Body, Soul, and Spirit and accept Him as your Savior and King. Willingly give your will to Him and ask Him to transform you.

I know it will be difficult in this day and age but you must make a decision to limit what you watch on TV or the music that you listen to. Do not watch any level of sexual content or listen to any level of sexual innuendo in music. This will make you struggle unnecessarily. If you keep focusing on Jesus, as you get closer to Him, you will not even want to watch or listen to sexual content.

You can win in Christ.

God Bless you.

I appreciate this but I do not believe that TV and such is the problem. It really is just thoughts that come from nowhere.

You cannot keep the birds from flying overhead.

You can, however, keep the birds from making a nest in your hair.

All, I think best thing would be to heed Fr. Edwards advice above and stop engaging. We’re just feeding a scrupulosity cycle.
