i found out the feast days in the Latin rite Gregorian calendar for the Nativity of St John the Baptist and Sts Peter and Paul. I was wondering are they the same dates as those feasts in the Eastern rites that follow the Gregorian calendar? the reason I’m asking is because there’s a week’s difference between Pentecost in the Julian and Gregorian calendars but there’s a two week difference between the feast of St John the Baptist for the calendars if you look at the Latin rite date. So i’m not sure if I have it right of if it’s just like that for some reason?

Also, are there Eastern rite Catholics who follow the fast of Sts Peter and Paul that is happening now? if you are, are you following it according to the Gregorian or the Julian calendar? did you start a week after Pentecost in any case?

thank you! 🙂

I believe that the Nativity of St. John and the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul are the same date for both Byzantine and Latin Christians (June 24 and June 29, respectively). The Julian calendar is thirteen days behind the Gregorian, so each Julian date is thirteen days after its corresponding Gregorian date. That is probably the two week difference you notice.

As for Pentecost, it is determined by the date of Pascha/Easter, which is, in turn, determined by a cycle based on the Jewish lunisolar calendar. The Julian and Gregorian paschal cycles are computed differently, so Pascha/Easter, Pentecost, and other feasts based on the cycle can occur simultaneously or separated by a varying number of days. The Paschal cycle is, of course, completely separate from the strictly solar aspects of the Gregorian and Julian calendars. Most feasts are dated using this solar aspect, not using the Paschal cycle.

Anyway…Here are Gregorian/civil calendar dates for when the feasts you mentioned should be observed.

Nativity of St. John the Forerunner
LATINS: June 24
BYZANTINES on Julian: July 7
BYZANTINES on Revised Julian: June 24
BYZANTINES on Gregorian: June 24

Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul
LATINS: June 29
BYZANTINES on Julian: July 12
BYZANTINES on Revised Julian: June 29
BYZANTINES on Gregorian: June 29
