I thank all of you who posted your replies, opinions and advice on participating in the Robert Crown Health Education program in Illinois.

I did keep my daughter home that day. We had our own discussions and I told her that these are sacred things that God has blessed us with and that they should always be discussed as of and from God. My daughter is naturally curious but also very sensitive to the material. When I gave her a light overview of the topics that were to be discussed she told me that she would rather learn privately and from us (her parents.) I totally understand where she is coming from.

I want to teach my daughters these holy things in terms of Theology fo the Body- one of the beautiful gifts JPII left us with.

I did continue my investigation of the website and was further convinced that while important information was being provided in health education, it did not agree with our family principles. We don’t support Planned Parernthood:

This link refers to parents “reproducing so the human race doesn’t die out” and gives it an “ew!” Doesn’t sound very sacred to
me!

And there are links to the male and female reproductive systems, erections- but abstinence and virginity are merely mentioned, not linked.

Finally, in talking to as many seasoned parents as I could for all different views, I find out that the Chicago arch. schools are pulling out of the program altogether.

In hindsight, I can’t believe that there was even a choice. But the pull of the world is so great. Maybe God let me experience this worldly pull to strengthen me for what is to come. I learned alot from this.

I learned to listen to God as he talks to my heart and through Godly people like yourselves. Thank you again!

God Bless!

Thank you for your story. 🙂

It seems like this is one very important issue that parents don’t want to miss out on with our children. We have four teenagers and two younger ones, and we are convinced we cannot let the schools – even if Catholic – take over the task of passing on our personal beliefs on these issues.

Wow, this is gonna make me seem weird, but I’m a teen, and I went through the schools sex ed program, and really I am glad for it. I so would not want my parents trying to teach me about it.

But then again thats England. Very few people drop out of PSE classes to learn about sex seperately. :o

Very few people break out of it here; those who do are exceptions. There are many parents and children I know who are not close enough to the extent they are likely to talk “productively” about the topic. In our house we have a pretty open list of topics at any given time, so our kids are pretty able to get our opinions on these things and it ism’t embarrassing.

A lot of people have difficulty because they don’t like the content of the teaching, especially if it’s in public school and does not hold consistent with Catholic teaching. Here’s where I might seem weird – I don’t think it’s a problem for Catholics to learn what others learn, as long as they are also taught Catholic doctrine. In fact, I think it’s to their advantage they are given blinders to the point they have no idea what others are talking about.

Thanks for the update!! I’m glad you followed your heart, and tried to do God’s will. I was one that held my daughter out, and will be forever glad that I did.
