Gilley’s Rodeo Arena razed

Long before Gilley’s Rodeo Arena was glamorized by the 1980 movie Urban Cowboy, Terry Rinehart worked at the legendary Pasadena club planning the road shows of country-music star Mickey Gilley, for whom the club was named.

On Tuesday morning, Rinehart, sitting in a white 2001 Chevrolet Suburban, watched as dueling yellow hydraulic excavators tore into the white metal exterior of the once famous honky-tonk.

The one-time Saturday night rodeo hotspot is being torn down this week by Kingwood-based Inland Environment Inc. at the behest of the Pasadena school district, which acquired the property through a tax default.

One could argue that you could learn more in a bar than in a public school. But, whenever a tavern or bar is torn down it is a sad day. :tiphat:

Did y’all know Urban Cowboy it’s actually a documentary? Just look at the scene when Aunt Corene comes into Bud’s and Sissy’s trailer, takes one look at the food-encrusted dishes piled high in the sink and says to the hungover couple: “Y’all live like pigs.” Yessir, reality TV was inspired by Urban Cowboy. :clapping:

I thought that Gilley’s burnt down years ago… If knew it was still around, I would have tried to stop by…

A sad chapter in Country Music History is being torn down. Yet, some people would think that it was ‘a shrine’? WIth that said, you have to remember this Ohioian even KNOWS that Texans take their country music heritage VERY seriously. It’s a different breed than say in Tennesee, Louisanna, or even Georgia.

Never had a chance to go there but at least the movie would bring back the memories!

While living in Pasadena, TX, in 1981, I, off course, went to Gilley’s.The main 2 things I recall were the constant bar fights and the awful parking lot that was a sea of potholes.
I love to watch *Urban Cowboy *just to point out to DH all the landmarks I see.
After the movie came out, every other pick-up had those little license plates in the back windows with the names of the girlfriend/boyfriend occupants.
