Hi: this questions are mostly to non-catholics:
in luke chapter 24 verse 49 it is said: AND BEHOLD I SEND THE PROMISE OF MY FATHER UPON YOU; BUT STAY IN THE CITY, UNTIL YOU ARE CLOTHED WITH POWER FROM ON HIGH.

and then in acts chapter 2 verses 1 to 5 it said: WHEN THE DAY OF PENTECOST HAD COM, THEY WERE ALL TOGETHER IN ONE PLACE AND SUDDENLY A SOUND CAME FROM HEAVEN LIKE THE RUSH OF A MIGHTY WIND AND IT FILLED ALL THE HOUSE WHERE THEY WERE SITTING AND THERE APPEAR TO THEM TONGUES AS OF FIRE, DISTRIBUTED AND RESTING ON EACH ONE OF THEM AND THEY WERE FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT…

so my question is:
most non catholics say that the catholic church went wrong and walk away from God HOW CAN THAT BE POSSIBLE??? peter (1st pope) and the rest of the appostles were filled with the holy spirit, did Jesus lied or the holy spirit just went out of power?..Or maybe the 11 appostles die and the Holy spirit went back to heaven??

i dont find the verse but Jesus also said “I WILL BE WITH YOU ALLWAYS TILL THE END OF THE WORLD” Did jesus lied about that also???

Owned…

I agree completely. The Keys were passed and the keys did not just cease to exist.

Miguel,

Protestants don’t believe that Jesus’ promise carries with it a guarantee of infallibility. That doesn’t mean that we think the Church apostasized. Some Protestants do think that, but they vary as to when they think it happened (some, for instance, would say that full apostasy only took place at Trent, by which time of course Protestantism existed to carry on). Many Protestants–pretty much all mainline Protestants plus moderate “free church” evangelicals, which I’m confident in saying constitutes a majority of Protestants–would agree with me that a church can fall into doctrinal error without abandoning the faith, and that this is what happened to the Roman Communion. We don’t see that this poses any problems in terms of Jesus’ promise. I for one find it hard to see how doctrinal error is so much worse than other kinds of evil into which the Church has obviously fallen. In other words, the Church as a visible institution has clearly not been preserved free from all sin and error. Perhaps you are right that Christ has preserved it from doctrinal error in certain narrowly defined circumstances. But there’s no way you can get something that specific from the Scriptural texts you cite, and therefore you can’t accuse Protestants of thinking that Christ abandoned the Church just because we think that official doctrinal error is possible along with all the other kinds of sin and error that we all agree are possible.

In Christ,

Edwin

other Protestants, during the Reformation and since, do not reject the claim of the Catholic Church to be the one and the same founded by Christ, with His authority, but felt the abuses within the Church were to grave and far-reaching to enable restoration to occur. there is no blanket statement about the claims, motivations and historical basis of Protestants, individuals or denominations, that accurately describes what happened and why it happened.
