Hello, I am a 14 year old. I love and respect my mother but there has been times when she has done some things that weren’t really Catholic. An example would be when she missed mass because she was tired after coming home from the casino (she stayed till 6:00 AM) and well I remembered that delibaretly missing mass on sunday is a mortal sin, but I don’t know if this applies to being tired, but how can I convince my mother to go?

I have asked her before when was the last time she confessed and her reply was when she was young. I told her to come with me on Saturday (it was kind of like a joke but I really wanted to know her reply) and she gave this expression that pretty much meant, “Stop asking me.”

Should I just tell my mother? Or should I not even bother?
The thing that really bothers me is that what if I tell her and she doesn’t confess? It would make her sin worse.

Replies and advice welcom.

You are old enough to be diplomatic with your mother, other adults, and your peers. Be gentle and respectful of your mother. She may not be perfect or all that she can be. But people tend to resist changing if they feel they are being judged or condemned. So show your mother by your example that your faith is important to you and encourage her gently to embrace her faith more fully. And pray for her and pray to be the best that you can be too. God bless you and your family.

I think it’s absolutely wonderful that you care so much about your faith and want your mother to do the same. I think your mother understands that the option to come to Mass every Sunday and go to confession is always open. She might not take the opportunity right away, but I am sure that your example will have an effect on her. You could also mention going to confession and what a positive experience it is for you, without putting direct pressure on her to do the same. I will say a prayer for you and your mother. God bless.

What a blessing you are to your mother! Pray for her, and continue to set the example.
