This article written for the BBC is full of good news and hope in the fight against abortion, although undoubtedly BBC disagrees.

US abortion rights in the balance?

**"But in some states - notably Mississippi - local laws have already rendered the 1973 ruling all but irrelevant.

The southern state of three million has just one abortion clinic - compared with 400 in California. While some hospitals do offer the procedure in extremely limited circumstances, the majority of women wanting an abortion leave the state to get one.

For the US anti-abortion movement, Mississippi is an excellent example of how to achieve the aim of curbing terminations without waiting - potentially in vain - for the Supreme Court to overturn the historic ruling which made them legal."**

For every bit of good news, there’s bad news. In CA. they tried to make it legal for a school couseler to take a teenager across state lines to get an abortion without notifying the parents. This would circumvent the mandatory reporting requirements of Ca. Docs. It didn’t pass, but close. News is that they are going to try again with a slightly different wording. According to polls, this wording is what made a lot of people vote against it. So theoretically, next year it will pass. I gotta get outa here.

All this emphasizes the wide cultural gulf separating geographical areas in the U.S. And, it isn’t just states, it is also areas within states. There is a tremedous difference in views about abortion in rural and urban areas here in Minnesota. The same is true in Iowa. Generally, less populated rural areas seem to be more pro-life and urban areas proabortion.

I remember this being on the news when I lived in GA earlier this year. It was so heart warming to hear of a fellow southern state doing so well to close down the clinics. What other states (CA included) don’t realize is that instead of telling a young, frightened (assuming this is your patient type) girl about how horrible having a child would be, that it will be financially hard, she’ll have to stop what she’s doing, etc to bring a chid to term- kinda forcing her to believe that if she DOESN’T abort, then her life will be hell (of course without letting her think for a moment what her life will be like if she does have an abortion) MS is offering lots and lots of help without judging. When the help is consistent and meets the basic needs of the pregnant woman, I honestly feel that most women would choose life.

As for CA… there are too many liberals out here (I’m military so I’m not here by choice 😛 ) to allow common sense to reign. I’m sorry if some of ya’ll do live out here and aren’t that way, but most of the people i have run into out here are pretty liberal. It’s sad to think that CA is basically the forerunner of how our country will be heading. So what you see happening out here in CA, it will happen in the rest of the country in a few years.
