Is it a sin to judge someone after they are dead? What I mean is like someone saying that someone is in Heaven. Or saying that that person is in Hell. If it is a sin, would it be mortal or venial? Also, would it be acceptable if it would be said to comfort someone or yourself?

Thank you

The Church calls us to pray for the dead and makes no assumptions as to whether a person is in Hell or not.

People in Hell cannot benefit from prayer because they are eternally damned. People in Heaven cannot benefit from prayer because they are in eternal joy. Our prayers for the dead, then, benefit those in Purgatory…those being prepared/purged so they can enter into Heaven.

I would think it is a dis-service to assume someone is in Heaven unless we know it without a doubt (as with the Saints). The reason I say that, is because if they are not in Heaven, yet we assume they are, we may be inclined to not pray for their soul when their soul may be in dire need of prayer as they suffer Purgatory.

is it wrong for someone to say a dead person is in Heaven?

i believe an aunt of mine who just recently passed away is in Heaven due to the circumstances in which she has left us. i do not have to tell you the story. i just believe in my heart that she is. so this is a sin?

No, it’s not a sin.

Thank you for the answers. I had been wondering this since I have done it and witnessed it be done before.
