I heard on the news this morning the USCCB is meeting in Chicago. Does anyone know what they’ll be doing and discussing?

They’ll be talking much, yet will be doing little.

The bishop’s meeting is being discussed at length here: forums.catholic-questions.org/showthread.php?t=60523

They’re staying at a very expensive hotel called the Fairmont, which goes for about $400/night.

And they’re renting out the entire place, including all of the rooms they’re not using. To avoid hecklers. Apparently there’s a whole crowd of people who make it their business to follow the bishops around and cause trouble. E.g. one woman who goes to all of the Masses, and at the moment of consecration, stands up and announces “I wish to be ordained!” Although apparently she didn’t make the trip this year.

And just in case any of the bishops want to celebrate their own private Mass, rather than concelebrate with their brother bishops, they have a bunch of makeshift altars set up in the hotel lobby. And what are they using as these makeshift altars? Dissection tables from one of the medical schools in the area.

I kid you not. This is direct from someone with the archdiocese of Chicago who’s involved with the planning and organization of the meeting.

Wow, having to use makeshift items for Mass, how could they do this? Every place mass is done an ornate all natural altar should be shipped in, from campground to the frontlines in a war.

Sorry, but I just couldn’t resist. I have been to many masses that had to make do with what was available. From hospital rooms, to campsites, I have seen the rolling table in a patients room, to the bottom of a canoe used. I have even been to a Mass where ammo boxes were stacked to make an altar so that we could have Mass in the field. And these were done by roman priests and bishops. Anyway it seems you placed a lot of emphasis on something that is not a big deal.
