Using a priest you know for confession

I am not uncomfortable with it (no more than normaal confession anxiety) and I keep trlling myyself that priests like to see people in confession.

Keep in mind that it’s Jesus in the Sacrament too.

I have only been to confession once and it was with a priest I didn’t know so I am no expert but I will share the advice my spiritual director gave me. She told me that she prefers to go to someone she knows because he knows you and you don’t have to worry about doing some backstory. Plus by the person knowing you, he can provide some more indepth advice because he knows you and has a greater understanding of whatever you bring to the sacrament.

I think this is an area you need to pray upon. There are some good suggestions on this thread. One person felt more comfortable confessing to a priest who wasn’t her minister, while others I know prefer stick with the same person. You need to pray about it and ask God to lead you. This is a sacred time between you and God so you do what feels right. In addition, you can always ask around and ask who are good at this sacrament and who aren’t. Some priests have good reputations and others don’t. This could be their area of weakness. Regardless in who you chose, newbies are recommended to make an appointment because at least that way, your confession won’t be rushed and there won’t be a line up behind you.

The priest who is giving me instruction now is a very nice priest.

I don’t know if I will have to go to someone else for my first confession. I have a lot of sins since my baptism I’d rather not repeat.

Just the thought of first confession stresses me, let alone confessing to a Priest I will know quite well after meeting with him weekly for instruction.

For me, it spoils a relationship and make it awkward to talk to the priest. So, in my country, parishes, once a year, bring a lot of priest from other parishes and those who want to confess to them do it.

A priest I met at some meetings I attend, we became good friends. It’s so much easier to confes to him, even face to face is much easier. He gave me absolution twice, when I became very ill and he came to see me at the hospital. I tell you I get very scared when I have to confess face to face with anyother priest.

So, in my country, parishes, once a year, bring a lot of priest from other parishes and those who want to confess to them do it.

They do that here in the United States in a lot of places too. I couldn’t imagine having to wait all year to go to Confession though! Thankfully, there are a lot of parishes nearby here, so it would be possible to go to someone different you didn’t know all the time. I’ve always found the most growth opportunity when the priest was able to hold me more accountable becuase he was a regular confessor.

Now, I was born in Africa, where 7 hours of walk are necessary to go to confession.
The rules there are others, certainly, for Jesus Christ.
