I recently saw a thread asking about buying sacramental veils, and also noticed someone in a recent Mass at my parish wearing one. I have a lot of Pentecostal prayer shawls, and I’m curious if they would be acceptable veils?

A veil or shawl is just a piece of cloth.

I have never heard it called a sacramental.

I suppose it could be called a prayer-aid but I don’t think it’s a sacramental. Go ahead and use it, if t is helpful to you.

I would say that using such things would be acceptable unless there might be some serious confusion – for example, a denominational logo printed on the item. I know some Pentecostals who use a Jewish prayer shawl at prayer time. Hmm, they don’t mind looking Jewish but NOT Catholic. They are also fascinated with the Temple of Jerusalem and the Jewish priesthood.

What is a Pentecostal prayer shawl
It’s a square or rectangular cloth with designs on it, and sometimes a fringe. It can be any color. (Meaning of color is huge in Pentecostal worship.) It’s sometimes worn on the head or shoulders while praying or danced with during worship.

And I’ve seen a Catholic veil called sacramental in a different thread.

Thanks guys. I’m a natural worrier so I might be the type to go scrupulous. So much to learn! 🙂

They are in error. Here is the definition of a sacramental from the Baltimore Catechism:

catholicism.about.com/od/baltimorecatechism/f/Question_292_BC.htm

A chapel veil does not fit the definition at all. It’s a piece of cloth, a covering for the head.

The Church views Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox sacraments as valid, so I see no reason why sacramentals couldn’t be the same. As for Protestants, that’s a whole other story.
