**Utah Theater Cancels ‘Brokeback Mountain’
**
SALT LAKE CITY - A movie theater owned by Utah Jazz owner Larry Miller abruptly changed its screening plans and decided not to show the film “Brokeback Mountain.” The film, an R-rated Western gay romance story, was supposed to open Friday at the Megaplex at Jordan Commons in Sandy, a suburb of Salt Lake City. Instead it was pulled from the schedule. A message posted at the ticket window read: “There has been a change in booking and we will not be showing ‘Brokeback Mountain.’ We apologize for any inconvenience.”
Gayle Ruzicka, president of the conservative Utah Eagle Forum, said not showing the film set an example for the people of Utah.
“I just think (pulling the show) tells the young people especially that maybe there is something wrong with this show,” she said.

:rotfl:So what you are saying is that the cowboy from the group who sings YMCA isn’t a real cowboy??? Are you serious? But he looks so authentic.

I am impressed that the movie theater canceled it! Good for them! 👍

Would that others had the courage to stand up and **NOT **show this morally degenerate “movie”.
Along with a few others; i.e. Hostel.
I’m staying away from theaters in my own drove. I can’t even remember the last time I was in a movie theater. I think it was Titanic.

Wonder if the Mormons condemn homosexuality. Maybe the huge population of Mormons there had something to do with it.
Note: I am well aware of the heresy concerning Mormonism. I was just curious about whether they condemn homosexuality. Just thought I’d clear that up in case some of you get offended.

I wonder how many other movie owners have or will do the same thing…not just this movie but others as well?

With a few television stations not showing “The Book of Daniel”, I believe this may finally be the real beginning of the backlash against the Hollywood establishment. This may have started with all of us wanting the consumer world to wish us a "Merry Christmas and they are starting to listen. NOW they need to listen to the majority of their audience OR ther WON’T be an audience for their entertainment product.

I always perfer market forces to censorship when it comes to this sort of issue of adult entertainment. It is therefore with some interest that I note the fact that Brokeback Mountain, despite all the “critical acclaim” and Hollywood types tripping over themselves to praise the “depth and insight” of the movie and nominate it for awards, is not among even the top 25 grossing films released in '05. In fact, with revenues of only $23 million, it’s proving to be a flop with audiences. You’d think the producers-financiers would have about 6 more Passion-type movies in the works.

I just don’t think there is that wide of an audience that will seek out the angst-of-gay-cowboys-in-love film for their weekend entertainment. Even if I wanted to see the film, I can’t imagine talking my husband (or any girlfriends for that matter) into such an plan for a Saturday night!!

I live in Utah. I hadn’t planned to see the movie, but I have a comment or two about it being pulled from the Larry Miller theatres. I am not gay, and I don’t have any close friends or family members who are. But I don’t believe in placing judgement on gay people, simply because they are gay.

I think it is blatently hypocritical to allow trash to be shown, such as: slasher movies, demonic movies, movies containing extramarital affairs, over-the-top violence…on and on an on…but pull this particular movie because it contains a romance between two men. From what I understand, their feelings are not consumated in the film.( I dont know if that is true, it was a comment made by an elderly man who was interviewed after seeing the film). I think pulling this film does nothing but exhibit intolerance and homophobia…it makes no statement for rightousness, in my opinion. Its too ironic for words.

As an aside, it is so interesting to see and hear the way people react to homosexuality. Families shun their own in many cases, writing them off, as if they wished they would just disappear…because they are an “embarrasement”, and the family just doesnt know how to handle the fact that they are “gay”. I sometimes wonder if we wont be judged at the last day, on how we treated our gay brothers and sisters in this life.

So why do you think trash movies are allow to be shown? Because there are audience for it. These trash movies have been around for decades. It would be tough to get rid of it now wouldn’t it because the culture is so deep into it. But will we learn from the mistake? According to you, we shouldn’t. We should accept NEW trash that comes out. And when we have enough audience to accept this new trash, hopefully, Hollywood will continue to make such movie. Supply and demand. Then it will be ANOTHER NORM in this degraded culture that we’re living in. Is this what you’re suggesting? To sit around and do nothing?

“I think pulling this film does nothing but exhibit intolerance and homophobia”. Is this the best you can do? Always ‘intolerance’ and ‘homophobia’ just because most of us don’t accept homo relationship. What must we do in order for these terms to be eliminated for us anti-homo?? Accept? I find these terms to be overuse and tiresome!

I don’t know what you mean by “their feelings are not consumated in the film”. Two men had sex. Is that consummated enough?

Theater attendance is falling as a result of DVDs, Tivo, DVRs, home theater systems, IPods, big plasma TV, high definition TV, etc.

The audience in the theaters is disappearing, but it’s just moving to the lounge chair at home.

Note that Brokeback was produced as a limited distribution film. It was booked into only 484 theaters. The new plan is to keep it in circulation, but gradually expand the number of booked theaters.

Narnia, by contrast, was booked into 3,500 theaters.

“Is this what you’re suggesting”?

I am suggesting that we have love, one to another.

I am sorry that my vocabulary isnt good enough in your opinion, to express how I feel. It was the best I could do at describing what I believe I am seeing here, which is hypocricy. You dont agree with me. I’m ok with that. My point was this: I find it ironic that these managers choose to show immoral vile and disturbing, disgusting movies to play. (And to me, no, the films I’m talking about are not the “norm”—this has nothing to do with the “norm”). And if this is about righteous judgement–why in the world would it matter if someone thinks its the norm or not. It happens to be a love story about a couple of gay cowboys. Thats something we can point our finger on and say: shame.

It is accepted in our culture to laugh at, and even shun those in our own families, because they are “gay”. Its not accepted in our culture to stand up and say “Hostel” is a horrible, demonic movie…we wont play that".? I do have a problem seeing how this is just going along with the norm.

As I said, I didnt see the film. As to the two men having sex or not, I wouldnt know, except that an elderly man who was interviewed on t.v. after viewing the movie, made the statement that these two men could not “consumate” their feelings. Perhaps the man didnt know the meaning of the word.

Peace be with you all. I have said more than I maybe should have. I’d actually like to become friends with all of you here on this site. I do have compassion for gay people. I hate even the thought of slasher movies. :o Can I still fit in here?

Most excellent of you. Nice to see one person with something to offer besides knee-jerk hate disguised as devotion. Good going.

All right, I’ve tried to be civil, I have. But here’s an idea for you: stop being a bigoted little twit. Then maybe people of a kinder ilk than you will stop thinking of you that way.

Finally, a right answer.

This movie is the work of forces that we should not trust. A movie like Brokeback shouldn’t be in theaters because it promotes a lifestyle that God did not intend for his children to live. The sexual bond between man and woman is sacred, unholy as it may be. I have taught my daughter [my adopted daughter] to resist these temptations–she’s threatened to be one of these ‘lesbians’…I don’t know what to think. It’s all this Hollywood and the pornography that these Hollywood hucksters pass off as films. I do not want to go to a movie on God’s earth and see the atrocities portrayed in Brokeback Mountain! My daughter is grounded for a month for this way of thinking.

Hollywood is corrupting our planet, as is the homosexual atrocity. God save us.

Brian.
