Either. Vale means valley/

I understand the mourning and weeping part, but why are we doing so in a vale / valley of tears?

A poetic style of writing, signifying the sadness and desolation of a world without hope. The agony of life separated from God by our own sins and disobedience etc. A thouroughly beautiful and moving prayer.

In a similar vein would be the following verse:

Yea though I walk through the valley and shadow of death I shall fear no evil.

same basic concept.
