Hey everyone-

So this will be my first Valentines Day with DH since we got married and I want to do something special for him, but can’t think of anything beyond the normal stuff (candy, nice card, etc)

Ladies- What are you doing for your special guy this year?

Guys- What would you like the woman in your life to do for you to show their love?

Thanks for your help!

Let me see, it is the feast of St. Cyril. We will be doing normal Saturday errands, prepping lessons for CCD on Sunday.

Since this is one of those “fake” holidays made to sell greeting cards, we don’t buy into it.

I will hit the clearance bins on Sunday to get cheap chocolate 😃

I usually make a lasagna for him, but I think this year I’ll do a brisket since it’s a little less involved, and he loves my brisket. Ranch Style beans and mustard potato salad to go with it. He suggested last night we go out to dinner, but that’s just insane since restaurants are packed for Valentine’s day.

I’m also hoping to get him a docking station for his Zune mp3 player, and a Nick Drake album, if finances will allow.

A big, gigantic kiss.

A chocolate one.

And perhaps a real one, too. (He would undoubtably find the second one a thousand times sweeter!)

Same here, finally first married V-day and I’m pregnant :o

We don’t usually do much. As noted, restaurants would be jammed, we shouldn’t be eating out (counting our pennies here), and we both have an aversion to crowds. So I’ll probably just make a nice dinner and rent a movie. Boring I know! I’d rather save up any fun idea I might get for our anniversary.

I usually like to make him a really nice meal that he loves (lasagna is always a good one for us, beef stroganoff, chili) and have a candlelight dinner or a picnic on the floor while we watch a romantic movie (he likes certain chick flicks). And then we play board games or something we love doing together. Just a peaceful and together-time evening. Now that we’ve got two kids, there’s not much else I could think of doing anyway. But I hate being in really big crowds as does DH, so staying in is more romantic for both of us. Oh, and also dressing really nicely - doing my hair, makeup, and wearing an outfit he loves. 😃

My husband’s not too excited by this, but here’s a fun Valentines breakfast that my kids love. This is really easy! Prepare pancake mix of your choice, then pour in V shapes on the griddle. The V shaped pancakes spread to look like hearts. ❤️

Serving suggesions: serve with Strawberry or Raspberry syrup, or strawberries and whipped cream, (or both). If your sweetheart likes chocolate, you can add a few mini-chocolate chips into the pancake batter. Sprinkle with powdered sugar garnish.

It would depend on the woman because I like people’s own ways of showing affection. Maybe pick something that expresses you somewhat? Something he loves about you? Perhaps something that involves both of you. You could take him somewhere special, like a place which is dear to both of you. You could go to mass in a nice old church somewhere, then take an evening stroll in a picturesque alley, then spend a while in a nice tiny cafeteria and talk a bit.

DH and I have never “officially” DONE Valentine’s Day (i.e.–candy, flowers, dinner out, etc.) because it seems ridiculous that a single long-stemmed rose that costs $1.50 on January 14 should suddenly cost $5 on February 14 (ditto the $12 steak dinner that suddenly costs $30 just because they put candles on the table!) Plus, when we go out to dinner, we like to take our time and most places want you out in an hour on Valentine’s Day so they can get the next reservation in! Also, try getting a babysitter booked after February 1st!

So for years now (since I’ve always had to work on Valentine’s Day it seems–comes with being a cake decorator), we’ve always done dinner at home: our son always loved shrimp cocktail, so we set him up in the TV room with shrimp cocktail and a new video (the kid makes out like a bandit on Valentine’s Day!) and then DH and I set up our living room with soft music, candles and a nice dinner for two. Start off with an appetizer (shrimp cocktail anyone?) and a salad, then the main course, sometimes halibut steaks, sometimes steak, sometimes Cornish hens, with a nice side dish. Before I leave for work in the morning, I leave sticky notes with mushy sayings on them all over the house for him to find (by the coffee maker, in his sock drawer, on the shower faucet, in his Bible, on his steering wheel… you get the picture!)

This year, with DS being 14, I’m making them both Valentine bags with their favorite goodies… and it’s usually cheaper than a Hallmark card! DH loves chocolate bars, beef jerky, sardines (yeah, I know), Twizzlers, etc. DS likes Jolly Ranchers, Snickers, beef jerky, Cheez-Its, etc. and of course his customary new movie to watch while Dad and I have our romantic dinner (found some excellent ribeyes for DS and me–he’s outgrown “just” a shrimp cocktail for dinner–and a porterhouse for DH on special last week… they’re in the freezer for the big day!)

DH usually gets me a card and flowers… Mother’s Day is when he goes all out for me (bubble bath with candles, foot rub, etc.) because I have to work EVERY Mother’s Day and it’s usually a long, hectic day! But my mother always accuses us of never having gotten back from out honeymoon (we’ve been married 20 years) so every day is Valentine’s Day for us!

we live in washington…so we are probably heading up to seattle (about an hour away) and spend the day hiking, or at the beach walking around. in the evening we plan on watching the sunset (with the space needle in the background and all the seattle lights… ahh).
we are generally outdoors-y people, so if that doesn’t work out, we’ll probably drive up to Mt. Rainier and hike… and picnic =]

It’s my oldest son’s birthday, so traditionally we’ve focused on that more than the holiday!😛

Heart-shaped meat loaf?

In the calendar of the Extraordinary Form, it’s the Feast of St Valentine.

St Valentine, Priest and Martyr, is believed to have been executed on 14 February around AD270 for marrying Christian couples against the wishes of the Emperor Claudius II. The Feast has been kept in Rome since 496, under Pope Gelasius, according to Butler’s.

And if it’s connected with greetings cards, that’s hardly a newfangled thing - the Catholic Encyclopaedia notes the practice has been around since at least the fourteenth century.
