In a poor and/or mission parish where they are tight on liturgical items, would it be an appropriate gesture for the priest to implore the use of the ciborium cover as a paten for servers? Assuming it does not have a hole for a screw or whatnot.

I guess someone would claim it would look tacky, but how many people would notice? Or another could claim that it is not it’s official use therefore should not be used.

In my opinion, the fact that the priest want to use it as a paten when one is not available is a good thing.

A ciborium cover is a fraction of the size of the traditional communion paten. I wonder if maneuvering something that small, and lacking a handle, into the proximity of a communicant’s mouth/hands might actually cause accidents and dropping of the Host.

I would approach the Knights of Columbus from the sponsoring parish of that Mission.
They supply liturgical items in memory of deceased Knights all the time. Even a small mention in a parish bulletin of a sister parish would garner many donations of specific items, and a fund for the Pastor’s discretion. People love to know that their donations went to the Liturgy.
