I was at a Mass some time ago and the elderly priest who was celebrating forgot to lift the host and chalice in consecration. I realize now that the sacrament was valid, because I am sure the priest intended to say the words of consecration. However, at the time I thought that it was not valid, and I approached communion as if I was receiving merely bread and wine. Was this a mortal sin? If so, how do I confess it? Thank you for your help.

If he didn’t say the words of consecration then it was not the Eucharist. If he did say the words but did not lift the chalice then it was the Eucharist.

I do not think what you did was a mortal sin but heck, when in doubt confess it.

I think if I remember correctly that the priest skipped the entire consecration. Was the sacrament valid? Was I right in assuming that I was only receiving bread and wine?

No it was not Good Friday or Saturday. It was just a normal Sunday Mass.

Ask a priest, I wouldn’t sweat it. It can’t be mortal unless you had priar knowledge (you knew it was wrong before hand), you intended to do it anyway, and it was a grave matter. From what you’ve said, I dont see those three conditions met. I only see scrupulousness! With all due respect and love, be careful not to get hung up on petty stuff. God bless you!
