you are right on one account, and looking back, i do remember now that the tabernacle was open and vacant. as far as the actual convalidation, i guess i don’t know all the answers to the legality of it. I will have to check with my priest or my deacon. thank you for the info. I do remember though that all rcia candidates had their first reconciliation that day as well. I think i will also contact the diocese and find out if there is any dispensation given by the Bishop or the usccb.
I hope I did not give you cause for concern. That wasn’t my intention. Although we shouldn’t celebrate sacraments on Holy Saturday I don’t think they would be invalidated if celebrated on that day. One wouldn’t celebrate Baptisms or Confirmations (except in danger of death). Weddings and Holy Orders shouldn’t be celebrated. Mass cannot be celebrated and Worship of the Eucharist outside Mass is prohibited. Communion may only be given as Viaticum. Of course, the Church never withholds availability to Reconciliation and Anointing the Sick is usually reserved for serious situations anyway.

I had a friend who got married in her jeans and white shirt. Her groom wore pretty much the same thing.

It was in a Catholic church, conducted by a Catholic priest, according to the Catholic form. It was perfect.

(Well, we weren’t friends yet when she got married, so I don’t know why they stuck with jeans).

Congratulations.

Just three words of advice, which I think are warranted considering your use of the baiting phrase “huge vanity pageant wedding.”

Don’t misjudge others.

That baiting it’s taken until post #23 for someone to “take the bait”, It’s not baiting at all. It’s quite clear the OP is more interested in the essentials of marriage rather than the externalitiies of a wedding. I for one find this very refreshing!

Well, I’m glad you all think it’s a good idea. No baiting was intended, but working in hospitality, I have seen many a wedding that outstripped the cost of a college education because the bride or her mother simply had to have the latest and greatest little fad. Imagine if these couples spent as much energy preparing for their marriages as they did for their weddings! I’m glad my fiance and I can agree on what our financial priorities are and are not.

My fiance has just started RCIA, so he won’t be received into the church until Easter of 2012. We will most likely be married before that. Even if he were already Catholic, it would seem inhospitable to have a Mass because we’ll be the only Catholics in the room (our families are Mormon). The groom and I will get new suits for the occasion, and we’ll probably have something like a backyard BBQ afterward.

We will have to find a different church to be married in, since we belong to the Cathedral parish and it costs $700 just to use the building (twice that for non-parishoners  ). I don’t know how to go about that, but I’m sure our deacon has a pretty good idea how to do it. There may also be a provision for parishoners who don’t want to have a big shindig, and they just don’t write it on the website. The wedding within Sunday Mass seems a good idea, but I’ve belonged to this parish since I was 17 and I’ve never seen it happen there.

Thanks for all the advice, and I will keep you posted as events warrant 👍

I’ve never seen it either, but apparently it’s an option at my church.
