What were the main changes brought about by Vatican 2, and why were they needed?

I’m gonna say an increase in the participation of laity in Mass and elsewhere in parish life, and an increased emphasis on ecumenism.

It was needed because it was lacking.

You just started a thread on “Does the Catechism need updating”
And one on Editing of the Bible stating that it has been said the Bible has been updated many times, are all Catholics reading the same stuff, who did the editing and why. . .
‘And now you, listed as Catholic, are asking about Vatican 2 changes?

May I respectfully suggest that since you already have two threads going, that you utilize the library RIGHT HERE on this site and read up yourself on Vatican 2? Trying to follow three different threads even if you’re stuck at home is a bit much. The library here is more than adequate to answer your questions and THEN you can ask more pertinent questions when you have a bit more information.

Focus on your second question…

The world and the Church had changed a lot in the decades before the council. Laity were taking on roles never anticipated at Trent. Christians in general were already beginning some ecumenical contacts, just not formalized yet. The development of media had been observed by recent popes including St Pope Pius X.

The Church was already adapting somewhat but in a haphazard disorganized way. The Council tried to channel those changes in a consistent way.
