Peter’s Pence is the practice of lay members of the Roman Catholic Church providing financial support to the Holy See.
While the regular tithe goes to the local parish or diocese, the Peter’s Pence goes directly to Rome. It was formalised in 1871 by Pope Pius IX who gave it his approval in the Encyclical Letter Saepe Venerabilis (5 August 1871).
At present this collection is taken each year on the Sunday closest to June 29, the Solemnity of both Saint Peter and Saint Paul, according to the Roman Church. According to the report, in 2007, donations amounted to $79,837,843. In 2006 it was $101,900,192. United States was the biggest donor, giving some 28% of the total. It was followed by Italy, Germany, Spain, France, Ireland, Brazil and Korea.
Sierra Club: $100 million, 2004
PETA: $25 million in income in 2005 from donations.
Every once in awhile there’s talk about the Vatican riches, and how the Church is rich. In fact many archdioceses and universities have far more income annually than the Vatican. In the case of the artwork and historical treasures in the Vatican, these are all marked off at $0.00 in the Vatican budget. This is because they can never be sold, and always will be maintained at a loss, due to the care and expense of preserving them – they are considered part of the cultural and religious heritage of mankind and in the caretakership of the Vatican only, and can never be sold.
If anyone wants to add some companies or more exact/up to date figures and corrections to this list I’d appreciate it. I just quickly cobbled it up from Wikipedia, and would like to spiff it up so I have a standard document to hand to or email to the ‘Vatican Riches’ crowds.
I’m sure similar to this has been done before so any links to such efforts are appreciated too.
