Best thing to do would be read the documents from Vatican II.

I would highly recommend reading the Biography of JP II, “Witness to Hope” by George Weigel. Not only is it a great story of a greta man, not only will you learn aa ton abut history, but JP II was a key contributor to Vatican II, and Weigel goes into Vatican II in great detail, from inception by John XXIII all the way through JP II’s aggressive implementation of it in Poland and later as Pope. I learned a ton about the mission of V II that I had never heard/read before.
