Vatican Meets Centering Prayer

Hi Exporter,

It sounds as though “centering prayer” is a form of meditation. At least that’s how I understood it. I was a practicing Buddhist for a few years and as many know Buddhism and meditation go hand in hand. I find myself self still meditating a few times a week, not hoping to achieve enlightenment anymore, but a peaceful path to God. The centering prayer sounds as if it’s a positive thing. What were your thoughts?

This will sure provoke thoughts in a few and maybe an interest in others. Any comments?

Simply put, if Cardinal Ratzinger something is so with regards to anything associated with faith or morals you can take it to the bank. I believe Cardinal Ratzinger is one of the great gifts given to our church. In fact Cardinal Ratzinger is second in my esteem to only His Holy Father, Pope John Paul II of all humans alive today.

Secondly I would always avoid eastern mysticism if I were you. The Holy Father says all religions have some truth, but I would be careful that the truth of others does not pull you away from the full truth.

Exporter,

This article was posted in the “Centering Prayer” thread, and the subject was discussed at length, almost ad nauseum. You have only posted one part of a two-part document, both of which were linked entirely on the other thread. The author is not speaking on behalf of the Vatican. He is presenting his personal opinion based on a general comment of the Cardinal, which was not at all referring directly to “centering prayer,” per se.

I am wondering why you continue to bring this up, since the other thread had died for lack of new (name removed by moderator)ut which had any significant information beyond that which was presented there.

It is clear you are against it, and perhaps are hoping for another heated debate to present your bias. We had left the subject open to the reader to decide the merits of it, based on the multitude of links and information presented.

IMO, it is finished.

If you were look at the person that started this thread you will see that it was not me. If you were to look at the other thread which I have yet to read or see you will see that I was not part of that thread. I am not at all sure what you mean when you say “present your bias” I looked it up to confirm my understanding of the word bias and I don’t understand. If I am defending the teaching and understanding of the Catholic Church how can that be a personal and sometimes unreasoned judgment, or did you mean my “peculiarity in the shape of a bowl that causes it to swerve when rolled on the green.”

I am simply interested understanding the draw to centering prayer and why the push for it.
