Veils/head coverings

My wife and I are looking for head coverings for her. Is there any particular place that anyone can recommend?

• I seem to remember that . . . **EWTN’s Religious Catalogue ** . . . has some . . . under the title of . . . "mantilla" . . . I remember checking for them some time ago under the name of . . . "chapel veils" . . . and couldn’t find them . . . so when I saw this advertised . . . I took note of their name for the veils . . . just check their website at ewtn.com . . .

I noticed at the . . . breathtakingly reverent and beautiful . . . **Tridentine Mass **. . . with the **Chicago Auxilliary Bishop Joseph Perry **and the **St. John Cantius Church group. . . *which was broadcast from the Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Hanceville, Alabama this week ***. . . a great many of the women wore the mantilla’s/chapel-veils . . . *quite a few in our services wear them . . . *

For normal everyday headcoverings, I would recommend Deborah. She has tons of variety: headcoverings-by-devorah.com

For mantillas, I bought mine on Ebay and they’re great! Just do an advanced search for mantilla, minus the words “bridal” and “wedding”.

One more suggestion, for those who come across this thread later: Go to www.etsy.com and enter the search term “headcovering -hijab”. The minus hijab part will eliminate Muslim-style coverings from your search (although most of the scarves to be found there are perfectly suitable when tied differently). You can also punch up my Etsy shop at blessmysoul.etsy.com and look in my favorite sellers–there are several makers of headcoverings in that list, including Devorah whose other shop is listed above. I love her coverings because they can be worn loose mantilla-style or tied behind the head

Since summer has come around, my favorite everyday coverings have been cotton bandanas, which can be had for a buck at Wal-Mart.

Here’s a question that’s sort of in line with the thread topic; as the original poster’s question has been resolved, I hope it’s all right to throw in one of my own. This past weekend I agreed to housesit for my aunt, starting this Friday. Her house is within driving distance of the only FSSP mission in my city, so I intend to attend several traditional masses while I have the chance. However, as they absolutely require that women be covered in church(I learned this the hard way, BTW), I need to come up with a headcover quickly.

Would I attract notice/be seen as ridiculous if I wore a circular doily with about a 16" diameter as a headcover? It’s a pineapple motif that gives the overall impression of a large flower with a very simple picot trim, well made in a sort of linen colored (blondish) cotton thread. I also have a few cotton gauze scarves in dark colors, but scarves are so hot in this Arizona summer. As there’s no time to buy, ship and receive an object made specifically to cover one’s head at Mass by this Friday without prohibitive cost, I’d appreciate anyone’s opinion on which option would blend in the best. Thanks.

Are you sure they don’t have headcoverings available in the back of the Church? I’m not really sure which of the options you put forward would be best, but maybe you could call the chapel and see what they recommend? They may have some extras.

I do so much of my shopping online nowadays that it hadn’t even occurred to me that I might find something in an actual store. I guess I do have other options after all.

They have a basketful of loaners in the back of the church near the man doors, but sharing headgear bothers me. I’ve attended their Mass once and it seemed that the style was divided between lace mantillas for the married and older women and circular white chapel veils for girls and children, with a very few hats and bandanas scattered about for variety. I’m 27 and unmarried myself so these days I’m kinda trending toward mature spinster.

Thank you for the advice, both of you. I’m going to check out the Target and Wal-Mart near my home sometime in the next few days, and if I don’t have any luck in the stores then I’ll just get over my squeamishness about swapping hats. In any case I’m very much looking forward to the Mass.

• I’ve got a wide selection of large western bandana kerchiefs . . . black, blue, tan and red with white designs . . . and white with a black design . . . I fold them into a triangle . . .and lightly starch them so that they aren’t limp . . . and hang them on a hanger till they are needed . . . and they make perfect head coverings with cotton or denim skirts or nicely ironed cotton slacks and simple blouses for spring, summer and fall times . . . and being cotton . . . they are cool and comfortable . . . I live in a western state . . . so bandana headcoverings are very much a part of our culture out here . . . but these bandanas are really accepted all over the U.S. culturally now-a-days . . .

The reverent custom of headcovering is a wonderful one and much blest . . . very scriptural . . . and steeped in centuries of Church tradition . . .* and our wonderful Holy Mother has always worn a head covering in each of her Church approved apparations . . . *

The first time I went to the Phoenix FSSP and I didn’t have a head covering. Everyone was welcoming and gracious. So if you can’t get something workable in time, I would just go. It’s also possible there will be ones available for use. Although their weren’t when I went, but that was a few years ago.

Careful, you’ll make plenty of people mad with that statement. (Although I 110% agree with you. ) It’s become popular to diminish why women covered their heads to a mere “cultural” thing that had absolutely no other value at all.

It’s fairly warm where I live as well (was 106 last week). However, I have found lots of nice light weight long scarves at Steinmarts for very inexpensive prices. I buy cotton ones mostly. My grown son teases me and asks when I will start bowing to Mecca. but the rest of my family thinks it looks fine. Wal-mart sometimes has these kind of scarves also as does Ross Dress For Less, Kohls, Gordmans and TJ Maxx.

I’m off to get something tomorrow… i’m ashamed to say that I have been wanting to go for three weeks now but haven’t got my act together about the head covering I also was going to try to get my Mom to come with me but have since found out that she really really disliked the Latin Mass growing up. She is very spiritual, she just enjoys the OF.

QUESTION: Our TLM Mass is at 8am Sunday morning. I would then be going again later in the day with my sons to our usual Parish. Should I receive twice? Lol, now my youngest son has been accepted to be an altar server at the Catheral downtown (he’s so excited ) which means I could possibly be going a third time

Personally, do you have a Catholic Store near where you live? I do, and I think that is the best idea. Go to your local Catholic store and support them if they have mantillas/chapel veils. That’s what I did. I have been wearing a mantilla for quite some time.

I wore white before marriage, and now that I’m married, I wear black, as tradition attests.
