My local Catholic radio station (full disclosure: I am a board member – KCID-FM) is promoting a novena for the beatification of Ven. Samuel Mazzuchelli. He was a missionary to the “Iowa Territory” – Southwest Wisconsin and Northeast Iowa, preaching to the Ojibwa and Menominee tribes after learning their languages.
The prayer for today in the Novena bears repeating for noting that our current inability to rec’v the sacraments is not a new thing in the church, and that many, many of the missionaries to new territories had to deal with having no fellow priests readily available for spiritual comfort:
Venerable Mazzuchelli, in your passion for the souls of others, and in love for the saving grace the Lord worked through your Holy Orders, you abandon your own means to the sacrament of penance for the sake of others. This deeply troubled your heart, and in your own words, you “had not once the happiness of seeing a brother Priest” for months on end. In one instance, after 6 months without a brother Priest to give you absolution, you traveled alone after winter had set in for 500 miles to obtain the mercy of God. May we imitate the desire for consolation of the forgiveness of Our Lord through means of the Sacrament of Penance.
Amen
