There seems to be quite a few threads on Mortal sin, so I decided to make one on venial sin. Most people (including myself), often think venial sins are no big deal.

However I had a revelation come upon me one day. My mother said something about how she didn’t like what I was wearing or how I don’t dress nicley or something .

Anyways, I was really upset over it. I mean, its not a big deal and she probably didn’t say it to offend me, but I took grave offence at that! I wondered why I was so angry. I realized it was because the goodness within us causes us to be angry. We see something unjust, unfair or wrong, the goodness in us notices. As well, my mother is such an important person, that small offences mean more than those that come from a stranger.

Now if my mother said it differently, maybe I wouldn’t have felt that way. I then though about God, who is so pure and so good, how he must feel about little sins. If I felt this way (and I felt horrible mind you,) how awful and hurt and angry will our Lord, the supreme being of goodness, who is love himself, feel about this. One who loves us so much, so much more than I love my mother?

So venial sins do hurt the Lord. I though I would just share that with you guys!

God Bless.

I agree! A similar thing happened to me recently, I got sooo jealous about something and it just disgusted me how sinful I felt, and I couldn’t stop the feeling for a few minutes. Definitely venial, definitely offensive to God!

Something a lot of people have a problem with is taking the Lord’s name in vain. It’s a good devotion to either bow our heads when somebody exclaims “Jesus Christ!” or to cross ourselves over our hearts, and finish their “Oh my God” with a “have mercy” 👍 That’s got to be the biggest venial sin people get into… at least among high schoolers!!

yea i have to be more patient with my parents. i got annoyed and a little angry this morning because i have to go somewhere soon and the name of the area i have to go to she has never heard of it so she kept on saying othere area names and i kept on saying no its broklin not buckley, but in a angry annoning tone.

I told her it was in the head office of work as well and she kept on thinking its in a tafe building then again i said tafe what tafe. it in the head office i told you. but in a annoying impatent and a little angry tone

i hope this is venial anyone know if i jumper over the bar. i’m not normaly like this but she got a little to me. i think it venial because she kissed me before i went of to work and we spoke normal after that i just should not maybe speak in that way and be more patient.

It’s not grave matter, you’re good!

We can’t always rely on our guilt to gage if a sin is mortal or venial. It’s got to be grave matter - I had to tell myself that back when I felt rotten after lying. I wish there was better education about what exactly is mortal and what is venial (but that’s another story!!). When we are unsure we always assume the worst. But hey, confess every Saturday and you’re safe no matter what :extrahappy:
