Should tonight be Evening Prayer I for the Feast of St. Joseph or should I pray Evening Prayer II for this Sunday? I’m confused with St. Joseph’s Solemnity being tomorrow because when it approaches sundown it is liturgically the next day right? Or does this only apply to Sundays? I don’t see why it wouldn’t apply to every day.

Evening prayer II for Latare Sunday, the Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter all take presedence over Solemnities. (Which is why the Annunciation of The Lord is being observed on Monday, March 26th this year.) During Ordinary Time and Christmas, if a Solemnity falls on a Sunday it is still observed. If a Solemnity during these seasons falls on a Saturday, Evening Prayer II for the Solemnity will be said that evening. If a Solemnity falls on a Monday during these seasons, then Evening prayer I of that Solemnity will be said Sunday evening. The only catch is in unique years, such as last year where two Solemnities fell back-to-back. Last year the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart was on June 23rd. The next day was the Solemnity of the Birth of St. John the Baptist. Last year on that Friday evening, Evening prayer II of the Sacred Heart was said. On Saturday evening, Evening prayer II of the Birth of St. John the Baptist was said.

Also the Days of Holy Week and Easter Week (aka The Easter Octave) take precedence over Solemnties. Next year St. Joseph’s Day will be observed on Saturday March 15th (the Saturday before Palm Sunday). The Annunciation of The Lord will be observed on Monday, March 31st (the Monday after Divine Mercy Sunday) In this case for St. Joseph’s Day evening, Evening prayer I of Palm Sunday will be said. On the Evening of Divine Mercy Sunday, Evening Prayer II for that day will be said.
