My guess would be that we are to do First Vespers for the Sunday but possibly we are to do the Vespers for Feast of St Andrew. Can someone please let me know?
Thanks

Saturday one would pray Vespers for the First Sunday in Advent. Nothing may supersede a Sunday in Advent.

Father,
What about vespers on Dec 8? EPII for the 2nd Sunday of Advent, or EPI for the Immaculate Conception? (According to my calendar the IC will be moved to Dec 9 this year).

I’ll have to check the ordo to be sure, but I think on 8 December this year you do first Vespers of Immaculate Conception in lieu of second Vespers of the Sunday.

I think it would all be better worked out if we still had the system of commemorations that existed in the old rites.

Yes, it bugged me one year when the Assumption fell on a Saturday and I went to the 5 PM Mass to find it was the Mass for the Sunday. I understand that it was a licit option (and would satisfy Sunday obligation either way)… It just felt wrong to not even acknowledge the Assumption at 5 pm on the 15th.

On the other hand, when the Nativity of Our Lady fell on Sunday this year, my priest, while using the propers for the Sunday, mentioned the nativity at a few key points and we concluded Mass with a Marian hymn. Closest you can get to double commemorations in the OF.

Just looking at my table of precedence in my French LOTH, I see that solemnities of the BVM are below Sundays in Advent. So it should be 2nd Vespers of the 2nd Sunday of Advent. According to the table, when the solemnity on the following day is of the same rank as the Sunday, then you say 2nd Vespers of the Sunday
Closest you can get to double commemorations in the OF.
On privileged weekdays in Advent and Lent (and the Octaves), you can do commemorations in this way:
  • You say the entire Office of the day up until the end of the collect;
  • Then you recite/sing the Gospel Canticle antiphon of the memorial for that Hour;
  • Then you recite/sing the collect of the memorial;
  • Then you conclude the Office in the normal manner.
