Because I have been told by two priests that deacons are not bi-ritual. I have also heard Fr. John Trigilio mention there is no such thing. Further, look at the process a priest undergoes to become bi-ritual compared to what a deacon goes though to receive permission to take part in another liturgy.

It might be only semantics but there seems to be something to it…
My only suggestion would be to write to my Melkite bishop and ask him! I understand that some priests (but certainly not my Melkite pastor) will hold a different view, but the fact that two priests have told you something doesn’t make it a fact. Archbishop Cyril Bustros is the eparch in the United States. The chancery is at

I have absolutely no doubt that you have formal permission from your Melkite bishop (and your own Latin bishop) to actively participate in Melkite liturgies as a deacon. Absolutely none.

I question strongly whether that permission equates to being a “bi-ritual deacon.”

Why don’t you just call the Archbishop and ask him?

BTW How can you say that you are a Bi-ritual Catholic Christian? That is not possible!😉

True! I think it’s just about as possible to be a Bi-ritual Catholic Christian layperson as it is to be a Bi-ritual deacon. 😃
