SUMNER REDSTONE DEFENDS CATHOLIC BASHING

Catholic League president Bill Donohue just received a hand-delivered letter from Viacom chief Sumner Redstone. Donohue’s reply is as follows:

"After Showtime, a Viacom company, aired the most obscene attack imaginable on Mother Teresa last May (e.g., she was called Mother F—ing Teresa), we mobilized Catholic bishops, priests, nuns, religious and lay persons to protest. And not without success: the vile episode of ‘Penn and Teller’ that we objected to, ‘Holier Than Thou,’ will never air again. That should have been the end of the story, but now Viacom CEO Sumner Redstone has made matters worse.

"Redstone’s letter (click [here](http://www.catholicleague.org/05press_releases/quarter 3/sumnerletter.jpg)) reeks with arrogance. Showtime, he says, ‘frequently airs programs with controversial, differing points of view.’ So we are supposed to believe that calling nuns ‘f—ing c—s’ is just a ‘differing point of view.’ When he says that ‘we as an organization are committed to artistic freedom,’ Redstone is being deceitful: CBS is a Viacom holding and CBS refuses to air the reruns of ‘Amos and Andy.’ So much for artistic freedom. But nothing tops his remark that ‘it is tolerance for that which may be uncomfortable, unpopular and perhaps even offensive to some that defines and protects the liberties that all of our society enjoys.’ In other words, Viacom’s intolerance of Catholics is really a demonstration of its commitment to tolerance. And by beating up on Mother Teresa and the Catholic Church, Viacom is defending the liberties of all Americans. Just like the Marines. Then why doesn’t Viacom bash gays and then promote it as a vital contribution to liberty?

“Of course, Viacom would never (nor should) bash gays. Indeed, it boasts on its website that it has launched a new gay and lesbian channel, LOGO, and even has a diversity program that includes ‘same-sex partners financial counseling.’ Now if only Viacom treated Catholics the way it treats gays, we could all enjoy ‘differing points of view,’ ‘artistic freedom’ and ‘tolerance’ without ever being the target of its hate speech. Come to think of it, we might even qualify for financial counseling.”

Curious that the letter was hand-delivered. I looked it up, and 450 Seventh Ave is only 9 short blocks from 1515 Broadway.

Anyway, I wouldn’t say that Redstone’s letter “reeks with arrogance.” However, Donohue ably punches holes in Viacom’s defense of their actions.

Well, that’s the last time I ever watch anything from Viacom!

If you don’t like it, don’t watch it. Censorship is not the answer.

It isn’t censorship to stand up and object to something that is so blatantly anti-Catholic. Even if you just consider it in “poor taste” to desecrate the name of one of the holiest women in the last century you should be objecting.

All that is required for evil exist is for good men to do nothing.

In other words, if a Nazi is preaching on your street, just pull down your shades and close your windows. Yes, a few kids might hear his garbage and get sucked in, but that’s not your problem.

Now if some clown were using foul language and bashing atheists on a network show, would Ghostgirl object?

Using hateful speech against any group is everybody’s problem. I don’t like it when talk show hosts insinuate that all Muslims are terrorists. I don’t like it when websites promote The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. I alos don’t like it when Jack Chick lies about Catholics.

I do what I can against hate speech, and anyone who cannot see that this is everyone’s battle is blind.

It would not be censorship for Viacom to refrain from showing something on its channel, nor is it censorship for consumers to decide what they will buy based on the character of the merchant. A marketplace of ideas means, in part, that those who sell bad products will be driven out of business.

Penn & Teller are disgusting human beings.

They proclaim themselves atheists…but thats not why I call them disgusting…

I find Penn more than atheist…he is an outright ENEMY of religion…especially Christianity.

I also think Penn is hiding behind the label atheist and is as much an atheist as Marx was…ie…not one at all…but a follower of Satan who pretends he doesnt believe in an afterlife. Ever read Marxs poems? He wasnt an atheist…he was a Satanist and I accuse Penn Gillette of being one as well.
