After mass this past Sunday a little book called “National Sunday Law” was found on all the cars…a quick read told me it was anti Catholic. Had the ususual “Papacy invented in 500 a.d after the decline of Rome” “Catholic Churh is whore of Babylon” etc. but two things bugged me the most because i did not know the answer. One, the author is against worshipping on Sunday since it is not THE sabbath in the Bible. He wants the original Sabbath observed. Second. He writes that the “Papal mitre” which says Vicar of the Son of God or something like that equals 666, since adding all the numerical values of the original Latin equals 666. how do i refute that? Thanks and God Bless 👍 Rod

Hey,

it sounds to me like you’re dealing with a Seventh-Day Adventist and they can be alot of fun. On the one hand they don’t agree with Protestants, but Catholicism takes the cake for being the GREAT EVIL!!! Otherwise, very nice people. I am currently in a debate with a friend over these issues, and yes he is working for that team. I found the Catholic Tract on Seventh-Day Adventism very helpful so you may want to check that out.

Here’s a link to a discussion I had about this topic. I think it comes from some seventh day adventists. And sounds kinda culty. Feel free to jump in there. The people there aren’t all catholic, so be careful. I talk about that vicar = 666 thing in one of my post there. you can do that with any name you want depending on what math you go by and numbers you assign. Think how many names you can get to add up to 666 with this:
A=6 B=12 C=18 D=24 E=30 F=36 G=42 H=48 I=54 J=60 K=66 L=72 M=78 N=84 O=90 P=96 Q=102 R=108 S=114 T=120 U=126 V=132 W=138 X=144 Y=150 Z=156

actually, this link may not work. they are resolving the server or something. just go to forums.philosophyforums.com and click on the religion and mysticism forums. the thread is called “national sunday law and armageddon” I talk about that vicar = 666 thing in one of my post there, i think on page 4. you can do that with any name you want depending on what math you go by and numbers you assign. – the NSL thing is laughable once you know what to laugh at. Don’t worry, they aren’t right.

Check out the “Pope fiction” article from Envoy Magazine. Here’s an excerpt:
But there are problems with this. The first is that Vicarius Filii Dei, or “Vicar of the Son of God,” is not now, nor has it ever been, a title of the bishop of Rome. The second problem is that virtually no one, including many unsuspecting lay Catholics, knows that this papal “title” is a fabrication. To an untrained ear, it sounds enough like one of the pope’s real titles, Vicarius Christi (Vicar of Christ), to pass the test. Unfortunately for those who traffic in this particular piece of pope fiction, the real title, Vicarius Christi, adds up to only a measly 214, not the infernal 666. In fact, none of the pope’s official titles, such as Servus Servorum Dei (Servant of the Servants of God), Pontifex Maximus (Supreme Pontiff), or Successor Petri (Successor of Peter), will add up to 666. That’s why you never see any of them used by anti-Catholics.
If the person making this claim disputes these facts, ask him to furnish even one example of a papal decree, ecclesiastical letter, conciliar statement, or any other official Catholic document in which the pope calls himself or is referred to as the “Vicar of the Son of God.” He won’t be able to find one, because none exist. Vicarius Filii Dei has never been a title of the pope.
Poof! That part was easy, but some people, especially Seventh-Day Adventists, will ignore the evidence (or lack of it) and hold tenaciously to the notion that “Vicar of the Son of God” is an official papal title and therefore identifies the pope as the Beast of Revelation. What else can be said in response?
Using the same math exercise we did above, point out that the name of the woman who started the Seventh-Day Adventist church, Ellen Gould White, also adds up to 666 in Latin. (L + L + V +D + V + V + I = 666). Then ask if this proves that she is the Beast. I can assure you the answer won’t be “yes.” If the answer is “no,” ask how this numbers game could possibly prove the pope or anyone else is the Beast. If you’re answered with silence, it’s a good bet that you’ve made some progress with the person.
By the way, Envoy magazine is really excellent. Very entertaining to read too. You can read the back issues on the internet, but I would recommend people to subscribe 👍

Blessings,
TTM

As far as the Sunday vs. Sabboth worship goes, look at Acts. It tells us that the early church gathered on the Lord’s Day (Sunday, the day of the resurection). It has always been that on Sunday, Christians gathered to celebrate the resurection. Now, that is not going to get you all the way with them, because at some point the authority of the Church will need to be adressed, but at least it is a start. Catholic Answers has some great info about this as well.

I’d tell him he’s a nut (charitably and in a spirit of love, of course :love: )

Ridiculous positions like his don’t merit a reasoned response since the questioner’s point of departure is already far beyond reason. Unless, of course, you just enjoy a good, pointless argument. :rolleyes:

Just my opinion, of course.

One fun thing to do is to mess around with words, people, or statements from Seventh Day Adventists to find something of theirs that totals “666.”

But I’ve never heard of “Vicar of the Son of God.” Vicar of Christ, sure. But you see what people do, is they just mess around with words until they get a hit.

When I tried “Adventist” I got 684. With a little work, I’m sure someone could turn them into the Antichrist. 🙂

The title “Vicar of the Son of God” (Vicarius Filii Dei) is not and never has been an official title of the Pope. It is an accurate one, but it is not a recognized title by the Church. The only similar title recognized is “Vicar of Christ” (Vicarius Christi), but adding this up doesn’t come anywhere close to equalling the dreaded “666”.

One thing a knowledgable Seventh Day Adventist may bring up is that at the beginning of the 20th century, L’Osservatore Romano printed Vicar of the Son of God as a title. They will claim that this proves that it is official. What they will usually not know, however, is that the newspaper immediately released a correction and an apology for the mistype. Just some more ammo for the good fight 👍

One can also point out that the SDA’s founder’s name 'Ellen Gould White" also is a 6-6-6 name :rolleyes:

I would ask your priest to put something in an upcomming bulletin refuting the claims because as rediculous as they sound you never know who will buy into this garbage. :rolleyes: You will of course volunteer to compile the responses and suggest those with questions visit catholic.com. 😉

I’d go buy a bunch of the tract “Pillar of Fire Pillar of Truth” and put it on all the windshields at the SDA church on Saturday.

Bwahahahaha.

Great idea. Send 'em here. And go get those tracts and put them on their cars. See how they like them apples.

I wonder how these fundies square away all this numerology stuff since its forbidden by God? :rolleyes:

Cafeteria Christians are bigger pains than Cafeteria Catholics…at least with Cafe’ Catholics its always the BIG MAJOR issues we need to get them on board with… Cafe’ Christians in general…Protestants, 7 Day Advenies, etc…are ALL OVER THE PLACE with picking and choosing from the bible! :eek:

Haha – you can make whatever you want out of Roman Numerals… I will now demonstrate how Barney the Loveable Purple Dinosaur is the Antichrist:
  1. Start with the given: CUTE PURPLE DINOSAUR
  2. Change all U’s to V’s (which is proper Latin anyway): CVTE PVRPLE DINOSAVR
  3. Extract all Roman Numerals: C V V L D I V
  4. Convert into Arabic values: 100 5 5 50 500 1 5
  5. Add all the numbers: 666
Thus, Barney is the Antichrist and Satanic, right?! . :eek:

Run to the hills!! The sky is falling, the sky is falling!

Boomer you are killing me stop it please:clapping: :bigyikes: . Never liked that dinosavr now I know why.

Would it be unchristian to warn these Seventh Day Adventists about their own founder?
Where is THEIR closest church by you?
If they are so worried about all this number stuff - shouldn’t they be warned that Ellen Gould White = 666!!!

BTW - the Popes hat is decorated - but it has no writing on it.
There is a popular SDA drawing on one of their tracts showing the evil hat with the evil writing.
But it is drawing - based on no fact whatsoever.

Thanks a lot. I was really confused with the same problem and now by God’s Grace it has all been cleared. But one question remains why are they against us this way. At least we are not the only church that worships on Sunday.👍

Vicarius Filii Dei

Some contoversialists argue that one of the pope’s supposed titles–they invariably give Vicarius Filii Dei, which means “Vicar of the Son of God”–adds up to 666 in Latin numerals. [Vicarius = V(5) + I(1) + C(100) + I(1) + U (5) = 112, Filii = I(1) + L(50) + I(1) + I(1) = 53, Dei = D(500) + I(1) = 501. 112 + 53 + 501 = 666 (the remaining letters in the title have no numerical values in Latin)].

This argument fails because:
  1. Vicarius Filii Dei, although it adds up to 666, is not a title of the pope;
  2. it is similar to one of his authentic titles, Vicarius Christi, which does not add up to 666;
  3. the mark probably is the number of a man’s name, not a man’s title, and
  4. many people’s names can be made to total 666.
It doesn’t follow that because a person’s name can be made to total 666, he is the beast.
