In the video game Resistance: Fall of Man, there’s a segment in it that caused a lot of controversy due to one part of it including the player fighting enemies in Manchester Cathedral in England. Now, it’s an alternate history game, and no offense towards the church was intended when they created this part, and the creators of the game even issued an apology, but would it be a sin to play the game despite all of this?

St. Francis de Sales discusses the “near occasion of sin” in his Introduction to the Devout Life. I would argue that the video game itself is not a sin; however, there is so much other useful things that an individual could be doing instead of video games.

If you had no idea of this scene before you stumbled upon it in the game and had no intention of desresptfing God, then I do not see how it would be a sin.

Personally, I would stay away from video games in general. Not because they’re evil, but they can be addicting and waste a lot of time that we could be using to help out community/church or relationship with God.

Just remember, even as with grave and serious sins, even minor sins require the three factors, it’s morally wrong, you know it’s wrong, and you do it anyway. If there is something that you think might be wrong, and you are invincibly questioning the issue, how can you know it’s wrong if you only think it might be wrong? Thereby, with scrupulosity in check, doesn’t look like it would be a sin to encounter that scene in a video game. Also, we have to acknowledge that it is a “fantasy” game, a story of sorts, that doesn’t represent reality nor do they tout any moral message. It’s pure entertainment.

On the surface, we are meant to enjoy the things in our lives, even those brought about the advancements of technology. I see nothing intrinsically wrong with playing video games with simulated violence as long as that violence is not directly tied to moral difficulties. Enjoy the game, play in moderation, and keep in mind that your life is to represent the Glory of God.

Peace.

If you have to ask, then just don’t do it, what ever the case maybe. Regarding the question of, is this a sin.

dont really see a problem in it. do you think the creators of the game actively want to destroy the cathedral, or is it just that a cathedral is an interesting and grand location?
