I would stick with the classics - Pac Man, Q*Bert, Centipede, Donkey Kong, Galaga, Frogger, etc. You can get a lot of these (or clones thereof) online as flash games. You can also get some of them (or updates of them) for modern gaming systems.

The graphics were so much less advanced, that they really had to focus on simple concepts with great gameplay. And not much objectionable content to worry about (except the occasional randomly-generated obscenity from Q-Bert).

It depends on which game systems you have. For the Playstation 2, I stongly recommend the Kingdom Hearts games, but they must be played in order (KH, KH: Chain of Memories, and then KHII). For Wii, You’re safe with Mario Kart or Legend of Zelda. I don’t have an Xbox, but there are some games all the systems have that are fun, including the Legos games like Star Wars and Indiana Jones. Kingdom Hearts is my favorite by far, and my kids love them!!!👍
I will second KH, Mario, and Zelda. I haven’t played the lego games, but they look fun (and this is coming from a 21 year old :p)

The sad part is, when I said that my kids love them, it’s because they’re watching me play!!!

I can vouch that Pokemon Blue/Red/Yellow are highly enjoyable. The newer ones might be fine too but those are real classics. The only problem I can think of with buying Pokemon is that there are probably not that many people who still play the older versions. Part of the fun is trading with and fighting against friends, so that part might not happen unless you have multiple kids and buy each a game boy (DS these days I guess) and a pokemon game.

To avoid rambling on and revealing my embarrassing levels of affection and nostalgia for this fantastic game, I’ll just give my recommendation. Pokemon Red/Blue is where it’s at.

Upon review: If they’ll only be playing games at your house sporadically, then this isn’t as feasible. The game requires some level of commitment and it’s only really fun if the player spends substantial time on his account building and training his team.

I would recommend a Wii with the lego games. The lego star wars and indiana jones are really a lot of fun. 👍

They also have Pokemon Snap and Hey You Pikachu for the N64. Old, but I got a kick out of them. 😃

Oh, In regards to the Mario games; I don’t know if anyone mentioned Mario Party, but that is fun with a group 🙂

I would probably agree with other posters that some sort of Nintendo system is better for the younger set. It can be much more difficult to find games geared for younger kids on the XBox and PS systems that are well done. I will confess that most of the games I play on the PS3 are rated T or M :o

I’m going to second (third? tenth?) the suggestion of getting a Wii. Not only can you play Wii games on it, you can also go to GameStop and get a used GameCube controller and a few GameCube games to play on it. That alone makes it worth it to me because my kids can both play the games that they want in separate rooms. Ai!

Super Mario Sunshine is a great game, as is Super Mario Galaxy. I also like some of the older Legend of Zelda games. But the Twilight Princess might be a little too intense for younger players. You can pick up a GameCube version of the Zelda games that has 4 different games on it. Look for one that says Legend of Zelda Collector’s Edition or something like that. It’ll take them a while to solve all of the games and want more! 👍

I want to have fun wholesome action video game to let my neices and nephews play when they visit. Most of them do not have much of this stuff @ home so coming to our house to play would be a great treat. 8-12 yr age range. Any suggestions? Thank you.
Wario Land: Shake It!, New Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Galaxy 1 + 2 for the Wii. I played the first two on demos, and they seemed like mindless fun that kids could really enjoy. Especially Wario Land. It’s cartoony art style is worth appreciating. If you’ve played a Mario game before, you know the level of violence to expect from these games. It’s pretty mild.

I own SMG 1 and 2, which have interesting visuals and game mechanics. While I prefer these over the first two, I would recommend getting Wario Land and New SMB first, since the gameplay on SMG is a bit more complicated. It might take gamers a while to adjust to the physics of SMG. However, I think they’re must-owns in a Wii library.

P.S. I’m a college student, and I still play these types of games!

I would highly recommend going off the ratings on games. Most things that are E or E 10+ are great. I’ve found that Nintendo is the best for family fun games, with few that can be deemed inappropriate.
