I’m just wondering if anyone is familiar with the Final Fantasy online games? My DH is obsessed with it (to the point that he neglects his family evening/weekends to play it). At first I thought it was just new and exciting now… not so much. Has anyone played it? Know anyone who does? Aside from the time spent playing it, should I be worried about the content?

Ok, I’v always avoided FF, as I’m not much into RPGs (Roll Playing Games). However, I do know the basic plot, and I don’t think there is anything particularly offensive in any of them. It would help to know what one he is playing (there are a whole lot of them!) With regards to the obsession, I’m fairly certain that that is the usual response to FF. As I’ve said in other threads on video games, I get obsessed with them far to easily, so I try and avoid some ones I know I won’t be able to stop playing (yet I still play Civilization…)
Yours in Christ,
Thursday (Emperor of Rome)

Thanks for your help. He has FF XI online. If it’s common to be obsessive about it I won’t worry too much. I just don’t know how to draw him away from it…

Well the problem is it’s a MMORPG (Massivly-Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). These games are extremely addictive (very fun though). These kinds of games very rarely contain anything worse then maybe some violence, it’s more other players playing that you would have to worry about. I’m not as familiar with XI, so I don’t know if it has any sort of profanity censoring or anything, I would suggest discussing the game with your child. All in all though, I really wouldn’t worry to much, usually there is a high point (maybe like a few straight weeks of playing) and then it becomes more of a hobby, playing only once in a while. I’m speaking from my own experiences of course (even though I’ve never owned a MMORPG, just some stuff similar).

Actually it’s her hubby (DH) with the obsession.

Meh, I don’t know what all these letter shortenings mean nowadays, same rules basically apply anyway.

As with most MMORPGs, it takes quite a long time to level your character, and it is extremely addicting. There are so many things you can do in the game, and there are so many ways to interact with others online, wether it be by joining a guild/clan or simply by fighting together. There really isn’t anything to worry about, except for the amount of time spent playing on it. It usually takes a few hours to get ANYTHING done, so that could be the reason he is on it so much.

It’s easy to go to far, it’s a great escape. I don’t play that game myself but do play many others.

It’s a hobby and should be treated as such, I’d wager to say that he should be at a high enough maturity level to discern fantasy form reality.

Like anything else though, moderation is the key.

The most you will see in Final Fntasy games is mild profanity, and that is few and far between.

FFXI is pretty clean, and players are booted if they use language.

The FF games are tame as far as anything heretical at all, I played most of them back in the day.

MMORPGs, as someone pointed out, are** very ** addicting. You literally interact with real people in the form of chaarcters. Before anyone scoffs, see how much time we spend on these forums 🙂

I don’t have the time to play them (to make ANY progress, they require hours of effort building up your characters), and FFXI is notorious for this among MMORPGs.

Everquest was one of the pioneers of these genre, and there was a reason they called it “Evercrack”.

Lucky for me, I had knee surgery this mrning, so I have an excuse to lay in bed and play playstation 👍

never heard of it but if your husband was playing on-line Monopoly to the extent that he neglects his wife and family, it would be a problem, regardless of the content of the game. sounds like there is a deeper issue here, like why he neglects his family, that needs to be addressed, hope you are both able to get marriage counselling, we will be praying for you.

I never got into any of the final fantasy, however had many friends who did, they became a bit (some a bit more) obsessive, however it wont last for that long, don’t worry 🙂
