I hold no ill will to my accuser. I do not want my acquittal to add to the hurt and bitterness so many feel

The only basis for long term healing is truth and the only basis for justice is truth, because justice means truth for all.

In the circumstances at hand, it does not seem possible to establish “truth”.

It is demonstrably true that the Full Bench (all 7 High Court judges) unanimously acquitted Cardinal Pell. Why? Because of a lack of evidence.

This is the truth.

Sure. But it is does not provide the truth as to whether the events claimed occurred or not. It tells us that the evidence did not rise to the level required in a criminal case.

Certainly the bulk of media are focusing on the court judgement as a matter of “reasonable doubt”, not one of vindication for someone falsely accused. Victims are being urged not to be discouraged, to report to police etc. The complainant himself (“Witness J”) in a statement indicates he accepts the court’s judgement and understands the need in criminal matters for a high standard of proof.

No one who favored the view the Cardinal did the crime has stepped back. Regrettably.
