I was talking with a friend the other day when this thought occurred to me…if heaven is outside of time, could my future self already be there (if I end up there)? If so, could it be possible that we are being watched by our future selves from heaven now? Could we even pray for ourselves?

Just interesting to ponder. What do you think?

I never thought about this before! But think about Mary and Jesus. They are both in heaven right now. Mary went through coronation and I’m pretty sure that means she wasn’t up there the whole time. Just something to think about 🤔

Then who just got a notification that I replied to your post?

I’ve thought about that before too. I would say it makes sense. It does seem like a bad idea to pray to our sanctified selves (presuming we have them), though every time I try to explore why I realize I am making assumptions that don’t make sense in heaven (e.g. wouldn’t our saints be more hardline with us since they know us better than anyone… well anyone other than God, who they are called to love and follow… and He’s not hardline…).

I doubt it. I tend to agree with Aquinas that only God is truly eternal and saints and angels live in the aeviternity. Sort of an intermediate point between time and eternity.

I asked this basic question of a very wise friend. While God exists both in and out of time, heaven is a place where we will learn and “grow”, therefore, there is time in heaven. A day may be as a thousand years and a thousand years as a day, but, it is not some sci fi thing where the “saved” me in heaven is watching the “struggling” me on earth.

We ought always pray for ourselves.

I second that. Time is change and only God does not change.

A fun point to ponder, to be sure. The vivid imagination can conjure up all sorts of scenarios. The basic answer is the question, how can we ever know while in this life? I tend to believe there is a portion of our conscious mind watching the physical world and assisting us with it. However, at some point I’m supposed to just get back at things and not spend an inordinate amount of time speculating, no matter how enjoyable it is. 🙂
