Can someone share the correct time to use vigil with a liturgy. We were using it in our bulletin for the anticipation mass on Saturday evening - we called it the Saturday Vigil but have since been told that vigil is reserved and should only be used for the specific vigils such as Easter, Pentecost and times like this coming Saturday for the Vigil of St. Peter & Paul. Help please.

The difference is that, unlike the anticipated Sunday Mass, Vigil Masses are not the same as the Mass that will be celebrated the next day.

There are specific Vigil Masses for certain feasts: Easter, Christmas, Pentecost, Ascension, Nativity of St. John the Baptist, and the Feast of Ss. Peter & Paul. While the prayers and readings are closely connected to the next day’s Feast, they are completely different from those of the Feast itself.

As noted Solemnities have Vigil masses which are distinct from the mass for the Solemnity. It is my understanding that, since the Saturday evening mass for most Sundays is the same mass as that said the next morning, it is more correctly referred to as an anticipated mass rather than a Vigil.
