I am a young Catholic who is still in college. I will be moving down South from upstate NY after I graduate and I am gravitating toward the Virginia Beach Area. To anyone who lives or has lived in that area, how are the churches and Catholic schools? I live in a very liberal area and want to escape to a more conservative, traditional part of the country where I can start and raise a family. Any insight would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

We lived there way back in the late 90’s. I was a brand new Catholic and was quite disappointed in the parishes there. I attended one that had a coffee bar, one that used invalid bread for the consecration, one that seemed “normal” except for a priest who gave the “loaves and fishes was about SHARING” homily.

The community in general seemed unwelcoming to those who are not military.

The BEST welcome we had at Mass was when we would go to Norfolk http://www.basilicaofsaintmary.org/ We were welcomed with open arms.
