VISION OF HELL

Part of our Creed of beliefs is: “He was crucified, died and was buried. He decended into Hell and on the third day He arouse again and was ascended into Heaven”. Note: He DECENDED into Hell" which simply means He (went down) not up.
Therefore, Hell is located some 6000 miles below the Earths surface (and yes, we’re all walking on top of it all the time!)
Vision of Hell
I saw the firey burning lake of lava, where the lost doomed souls of the dead were bobbing, weaving, tumbling and rolling over each other; gasping the hot gasses, trying to stay afloat. All were joining in the non-ending chorus of screeming; smelling the stench of burndt flesh and foul odors of all kinds. Worms crawled in and out of body openings, serphents biting them. Their faces and bodys were covered in redened blisters with orange puss ousing from the wounds…begging for a drop of water…a breadth of fresh air that never comes…wanting mercy where there is none in the eternity of the dead. -------------
It is of our own free will and choice to go up or down! We must be willing to follow the commandments God gave us.

The Jews believed that Hell was an actual place that existed inside the Earth. I could be wrong, but I recall that Scott Hahn posited that the gates to Hell are presumably under the Temple Mount.

But as to your description of Hell, please note that the Earth’s diameter, by the way, is slightly less than 8,000 miles.

Quite honestly, I personally think all this is visionary assistance to something we can’t truly understand. Kind of like when we talk about the “hand” of God.

If hell was actually under the earth, then what is to come of it when Christ returns and everything is made new?

No, hell is not in a four-dimensional realm, just as heaven isn’t. We are given visions that we can understand, but - like heaven - I don’t think it can be truly understood until we pass away from this earth, and then hopefully only understand it at a long, long, loooooonnngggg distance.

Christ did not descend to “hell” as we know it. He went to the place referred to by Jews as the Bosom of Abraham where the righteous dead were so that He could reveal Himself to them. He did not go to the place where the damned dead reside (if you can even call it a place). These images that must be referred to time and space are only a shadow of the things of Eternity and impossible for us to comprehend.

Circumference of a circle = Pi * Diameter. Therefore, to get the diameter, you divide the circumference by Pi. So if the circumference of the earth is 25,000 miles, then 25,000/3.14 = 7,961, or about 8,000 miles.

A state of mind is a place too. Turning away from God is putting oneself in a bad place. Turning toward God is putting oneself in a good place.

I’ve got to live by faith. I sympathize with Mijoy2. When I read of all these “definitive” interpretations of scripture and the Bible I get uncomfortable. Words have many meanings. I look to the Catechism for guidance and avoid ideas that try to be more specific about Scripture and Tradition than what Scripture and Tradition actually state–which is always filtered through our imperfect intelligences anyway.
