The Visitation of Holy Mary was originally founded to be uncloistered, and visit the sick and poor. The tide of public opinion turned against them doing so, and their founder, St Francis de Sales, cloistered them. This event is one reason why St Vincent de Paul developed the Daughters of Charity the way he did.

There are some Second Federation Visitandines left in the US, the most prominent being Georgetown, DC.
 
I am blessed to attend yearly a retreat at the Visitation Monastery in Mobile. Beautiful grounds!

The retreatants get to meet the nuns on the last day of the retreat, after Sunday dinner.
