I’m going on a college visit to the Franciscan University of Steubenville and I have plans to visit one of the orders of religious right off campus but I have no idea what to wear or what to do or what to say. Should I just dress casual or should I look dressy? I’ve never visited a convent before so if anyone can enlighten me and maybe give me some advice that would be great! (:

God bless!

Just be yourself, albeit modest. No cleavage, no short shorts or skirts, etc. Let them know this is your first convent visit, and they will likely take you under their wing where that is concerned.

Nervousness can sometimes lead to being giggly, so you may wish to work on that if it’s a problem for you.

Quell interior conversations with yourself. Jesus can’t get a word in edgewise if you don’t.

Blessings,
Cloisters

I think she means no short skirts, not no skirts at all.

Dress modestly and avoid a lot of “bling.” Keep things simple and plain and you will be fine. I pray this will be a time of peace and grace for you. Enjoy the silence that you may find there. Listen!

I agree with what’s already been said. Or, if your still unsure, call the order you are going to be visiting and ask them what would be appropriate. I remember reading about an order of monks in Arizona who insisted that women wear skirts and nobody could wear shorts. And you had to be able to walk quite a ways to get to their place from the road. They didn’t have cars, if I remember correctly, so it was a bit difficult. Anyway, call and ask them what would be most appropriate.

Actually, I would dress how you normally would (hopefully that is always modest.) Be yourself! Don’t put on an act- transparency is one of the most important things when discerning and entering formation.

Also, don’t feel like you have to act extra pious or show off your knowledge of apologetics in front of them. When prospective men come to our house of formation, I can tell you that that sort of thing impresses exactly no one. Its much more impressive when a prospect is real and up front- such a person is searching for the true will of Christ in their lives!
