While a number of institutions and dioceses offer vocational discernment weekends, it would be helpful to hear of specific retreats that people found useful in their own calling. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

When I hear “Vocation Discernment” retreat–most, if not all the time, it’s talking about religious vocations.

It would be nice if there would be retreats that helped people discern their vocation–whether that’s to be a religious OR WHATEVER their vocation in life is supposed to be.

I know that colleges and such have Search Retreats–which didn’t exist when I was in college–and maybe that is one of these type of retreats.

But it would be nice if Dioceses would offer similar retreats, and not just to the youth, cause there are some of us older folk (I’m in my late 30’s) who’s still not sure of my place in the world!

God Bless,

Barbara

Quo Vadis Days is a 3-day discernment camp, but I believe it’s intended for young men (I don’t know if that’s a requirment though). I’m going next summer to the Archdiocese of Seattle one. Here’s the link: 🙂

The only ones I have been on are two that were hosted by different provinces of the Carmelite Sisters of the Divine Heart of Jesus. The first one I went to was in St. Louis, MO and the second was in Milwaukee, WI. I was sick the first time, but the second time was so incredible that I ended up applying to the order, but I discovered I was called to be more contemplative. I would highly recommend these retreats to anyone who is discerning the religious life, whether you are called to the Carmelites or not. I have a friend that went and she knew she was called to marriage, but she wanted to discern whether or not to join the Secular Discalced Carmelites. She learned a great deal from the retreat and has built a solid relationship with the Sisters.

The Central Province in St. Louis has retreats all year round. They have one in August and October this year still.

I just learned today that the Northern Province in Milwaukee, WI is having a retreat in August.

I also have heard from several people that the Nashville Dominicans hold EXCELLENT retreats for those discerning. I’ve never been, but they do allow women who are discerning with other orders. 🙂
