So what’s the deal with vocation discernment? Does god plant seeds in us that we desire something and are fit for that vocation (marriage, etc) and therefore pursue that or is everyone supposed to try the religious life no matter what. I wanna know as I feel inclined towards marriage. I don’t fear being called to religious life but it doesn’t feel right and I don’t desire to be a religious
(whether that makes a difference or not IDK) and so my question is should we take a few months to discern and if our conscience is telling us to do something we do that(marriage, etc) or should we try every vocation to make sure even though you’re almost certain you aren’t called?

First of all, please forgive me—I don’t understand your title… 😊

If you don’t feel called to a particular vocation, you don’t need to try it to make sure. Plenty of people have gotten married without ever contacting a vocations director or visiting religious communities. Many others have entered the priesthood or religious life without ever pursuing marriage. Sometimes, a person just knows.

If religious life doesn’t feel right to you, if you don’t desire it, if you don’t think you’re called to it, then you are under no obligation to explore the possibility despite all that.

Having said that, discernment for any vocation takes the time it takes and that may be years. It’s not systematically a matter of taking a few months to mull it over.

Maybe you can discern what is God calling to you now. A particular apostolate in your parish? A youth group? Studying something or finding a job? (If you don’t have one already) care more for your family? This mini-vocations may help you discern your true vocation.

Also, find a spiritual director if you want, a trusted priest or religious ideally.
