Hi, I was wondering if there were any vocations within the Church for the married? I would love to be a Priest, but I’m going to be getting married soon.(Paise the Lord!) I was wondering what is out there within the Church. My friend suggested something like an RCIA director or something. But I’m not sure.

Number one, I would say that being married is a huge vocation in and of itself! It will be you and your wife’s job to raise the next generation of faithful Catholics - its probably one of the most important jobs that you can do in your life. 👍

Other than that, just off the top of my head, maybe you could help with RCIA, like your friend said, Bible studies, NFP classes for the parish - anything your church needs help with would be great. But just like being called to the priesthood is a vocation, married life is a legitimate vocation as well. So don’t think you’re shorting the Church by getting married - the Church wouldn’t exist without its married laypeople! 😃

Just as the PP said, marriage is vocation enough to fill a lifetime. Stick it out for a couple years and then see if you’re still looking for something “more.” With the wife’s permission, you can always look into the permanent diaconate.

The Holy Family Institute is a member of the Pauline family. We consist of married or widowed who live as consecated seculars. You can find out more at the following webside.

marriage is a vocation
other vocations are priesthood, or consecrated religious life

One of the finest preachers I ever heard was a married deacon. Given how thinly the parish priests are streched these days, a lot of them would be gratetul to have a hand in preaching, teaching, administering baptisms, blessing marriages, taking communion to the sick, marriage counseling…

One very large parish here in OH has 5 of them and they are invaluable - the two priests that serve the parish could not do it without them.

Of course folks like Karl Keating, Jimmy Akin, Drs. Scott Hahn & Marcus Grodi are fine examples of how laymen in the US have been instrumental in serving the Church in the US in the past two decades.

There is also lay ministry. We have a training program in our diocese called the Called and Gifted. The people who become lay ministers work in all avenues of ministry, from catechesis, service to the poor, community life, outreach to shut in’s etc.

The skies the limit!

If you have a vocation to the diaconate, go for it. Talk to your pastor, you will need a sponsoring parish, a supervisor and mentor. God bless you on your journey!
