Hello,
I am severely visually impaired and I want to become a priest. I use a white cane and an learning how to read Braille. I also have a porn addiction. I am almost 17 years old. I feel really torn between marriage and the priesthood. Can I join the priesthood if I severe eye problems? How can I discern my vocation when I have a porn addiction? I still feel called to the priesthood. Please help me. I really want to quit this bad addiction. Please help me to
know my calling from God.

Let’s get past the porn addiction first. Then retain a Spiritual director.

I know I saw a priest using crutches once, but I don’t think that blind men are permitted to receive Holy Orders. I am wanting to say that this came up somewhere else, and the answer was to the negative.

If you prove to have a married vocation, the permanent diaconate and/or third orders would be available to you.

Blessings,

I would also suggest that an addiction to pornography is also a serious impediment to successful marriage. Please get professional help!

I have heard of priests that were blind but were still ordained, so it’s possible as far as I know. I imagine it’d be quite difficult to be visually impaired as a priest though.
I think your main focus right now should be on overcoming your porn addiction.

Porn is a no go.

There are deaf priests, there are priests who cannot walk, their are blind priests. You may have to discern with an order or go far from your home dioceses. But it’s possible.

Incorrect. Father Jamie is blind and was ordained about 2 years ago. Also, there are other blind priest and Sisters.

Whether you are discerning a vocation to the priesthood or marriage you need to stay from pornography. Stop doing the devil’s work for him.

I was quoting another source, and I’ve never met a blind priest. I know of deaf priests because I’ve interacted with a Dominican community for the deaf. Where is Fr Jamie?

I have had two parish priests who are blind. One is serving my parish right now, and the other still visits every once and a while. They are both fantastic. You can do it!

Porn aside, there is a blind priest in my neighboring town, so it’s not impossible.

Blind, deaf, deaf/mute and priests with “severe physical mobility” limitations were all permitted in 1983. Technically, there has never been an impediment for the blind while deaf and deaf/mutes were strictly forbidden because they could not say the words of consecration.

I’ve known a few latent blind priests, many deaf priests, and a few with severe congenital malformations(only two fingers on one hand, got permission from the Holy See as he did not technically have a thumb) and one with childhood polio who had one paralyzed leg.

The only real issue, as I said above. is finding a diocese that is willing to take on the additional expense of training.

That said, a canidate for priesthood must be mentally healthy. The porn addction would be an impedement as per cannon law.

OWENSBORO, KY. he uses a white can and reads brail. He is about 32 years old.

You are still young, but you have to battle the porn addiction with everything you have, I mean everything.

Hold on to your dream to be a Priest, it might be a helpful carrot in your battle, but you would be disqualified as an applicant in the priesthood, should you still be actively using porn. It separates us from God. It can be dealt with, just as their are alcoholic priests who stay in recovery.

Professional and spiritual help with this is a must. One idea might be to seek out a 12 step group and additional help.

There’s a Catholic website called courage. It is made to help people overcome porn addictions. Get started on it. Then continue your discernment. I will pray for you.

I will be praying for you. God CAN and WILL call anyone He chooses…the broken, the addicted, the unclean, the lost. Hold fast to your faith, frequent the Sacraments, and beg for the grace to overcome your addiction. I know your blindness must also be a terrible cross…but nothing will be impossible with Christ. ❤️
