Dear Friends,

I am a catechist and a student at Franciscan Univ. and a couple of us are forming a reading group which will work through Hans Urs von Balthasar’s “Trilogy” (the three parts are Glory of the Lord, Theo-Logic, and Theo-drama) over the next 4-5 years. There are 16 books in all that we will be reading. So far we have 6 people signed up to read, including one professor who will help us work through von Balthasar’s thought. We will conduct the reading group over the Internet through an email group.

If you are interested in learning more about about the group or joining us, please feel free to use CA’s private message system or feel free to email me as well.

If you would like to learn more about the books themselves there is a good description of each book here:
catecheticsonline.com/forum/index.php?autocom=articles&code=showarticle&id=194

Perhaps CA will be able to offer the books in their store, or there are other ways in which you can attain the texts as well, such as through your local library. They are only published by Ignatius Press in the English language.

God Bless,
Adam

This is a fascinating idea. 16 books over 4 years… that would be about one book every three months. It sounds do-able, although I have never attempted to read heavy duty theology.

We currently have 8 people on the list to begin reading sometime this February. So far, this includes two people from the Catholic Answers forums, two people from another Catholic forum, and four of my own colleagues. Among these 8 there are two college professors, one DRE, two catechists with at least some theological training, and three laity who are well read in theology. We also have a number of people who want to read and watch the discussions but not participate.

I’m hoping to find 2 more people who want to read before we begin. I will be emailing a tentative reading schedule and some preliminary questions to gage exactly how we will go about our reading group probably within the next week.

We now have 15 members of our group and it is not too late to join. We have begun reading the first book, and while it is very dense, it is at the same time hard to put down. I find myself fighting between reading the Father Brown mysteries by Chesterton which I just picked up and Balthasar.

Our group is found here:
