I just saw a YouTube video and it said the Church is against the voting for President Obama because he supports sinful acts like abortion. So, is it really a sin to vote for a president that supports sinful things? I don’t like to trust YouTube videos too much because people sometimes put some strange things on there that are lies but I think that this one makes sense. Oh, and some excerpts from the Catechism would be nice but it is not necessary since it would take some time to look for it.🙂

Thank you

Bottom line is that if you’re supporting such a candidate for the reason of them supporting such sinful acts, yep, it’s a sin. Abortion is at the top of the list of things to consider, but not the only thing, as some here on the CAF will wrongly tell you.

The Church will never say it’s sinful to support Obama or anyone else by name or by party, but she gives a very good indication of the criteria in which to evaluate a candidate.

On the other hand, if you’ve done your homework and have a proper understanding of Catholic moral issues and how to vote on them, you are obliged to follow your conscience in the voting booth. Many would find it difficult to understand why an informed person would vote for Obama with sound moral reasoning in mind, nonetheless, there will be some who will in good consicous vote for Obama. Whether or not such is considered sinful is up to the Almighty.

We have the opportunity to choose our government leaders through elections. If we are, in conscience, uneasy with a government that favors abortion, euthanasia, infanticide, divorce, gambling and many other activities that are not in consonance with the law of God, then let us avoid voting for candidates who are openly encouraging those activities.
We need not be told that voting for those candidates will be sinful.
Our properly formed conscience is gong to be enough to send the responsible and deserving ones to government positions.

Sorry if there were many people before me that asked this or mentioned it. I think I am starting to turn this site into a game. The more things you ask people and learn, the more points you get. The more time and points, the higher your rank. At least I made it into a learning game. 😃

No problemo. Usually this topic gets a bit polemic, some insisting that one can never (without sin) vote for any pro-choice candidate for reasons other than their stance on abortion or any Democrat for that matter on one side, and the other side insisting that we are not obligated to be one issue voters.

While there is some good discussion along the way, that’s usually how it goes… 🤷
