I have been waking up the past few weeks, sometimes, saying the rosary and other times, the divine mercy chaplet. Years ago this happened a couple times. Then stopped. But this time it is somehow different. Maybe I could say that this time when I am praying as I awake, I am not just reciting words, but I get a sense I was there. There, meaning, if saying the decade where Blessed Mother is visiting Elizabeth, I am standing there with them as I am reciting the rosary.
I am sure others have found themselves praying as they awake. I would very much like to hear about your experiences. I feel there is more to this, this time, then “just” praying. But do not know.
I am hoping to get some insight. Do you know if any saint ever talked about this? Or someone in the Bible? Or?
It is very interesting to me,especially since it is continueing. The first time this happened, this time around, I thought maybe I need to be praying for my protection from evil??? Not sure though.
I would like to hear from anyone with insight on this and/or experienced this too. Thanks

It seems to be a type of praying without ceasing. I used to work midnight and swing shifts for years and now wake up intermittently. I pray during those times, at times drift in and out of sleep praying. I call it, “keeping the night watch with Jesus.” I believe something to this effect is in the Psalms also. I read it recently in the Divine Office.

If something concerns you, pray and ask our Lord to either take something from you or protect you from. I can’t see what would be wrong with praying though. I have had dreams also. The New Testament says people will have dreams. I have dreamed of the Second Coming of Christ many years ago, and this last July I had a wonderful dream of a visit from our Lord. It touched my life as a special blessing. If it was only a dream, it did no harm but did good to bring me closer to God. If it was a visit from Him, that does no harm either. It is not necessary for me to know which it was. Just accept a sweet dream as a blessing.

Talking to your priest may help you also. Blessings…

I sometimes talk during my sleep, and also during the period of half-sleep half-awake. my wife can have conversations with me while i am asleep, where I will respond to what she has said. It is very strange.

When this happens, it is often related to what I was doing that day, usually work related topics.

I have amazingly vivid dreams, some of which I have remembered and can still relate decades later. In fact, my earliest memory is a dream I had when I was just past my second birthday. And it was a dream (and God’s grace of course!) that brought me back to the Church after 14 years away. I have seen and received guidance from my guardian angel in a dream, and I have died in my dreams. I had an extended chase in which I chased myself in a dream, and I have flown through space among the stars and planets.

Last week, I dreamed all night that I was praying the Rosary. I kept waking up and reaching for my beads which I had brought to bed with me. I’d start praying until I fell asleep again, and then I’d continue praying in my dreams. It was a very strange, yet beautiful experience.

Accept the consolations of your dreams, but keep your eyes focused on Christ. If you are looking for someone to tell you absolutely that your dream means this or that, no one here can do that. If the dream has left you feeling touched by God’s grace, thank Him and enjoy the moment. If you feel you are being called by God to take some action, talk with your confessor and pray about it.

When you fall asleep praying, you pray during sleep; when you fall asleep with certain thoughts on your mind, you dream of those things; and when you fall asleep thinking of an object with certain colors in it, like a blue toy, you’ll dream about the color blue. It’s how God designed our brains, in His Infinite Wisdom and Mercy, for our greater good. We can use it to pray without ceasing, but we must ask for this grace, first, because prayer is God’s gift to us. We could not raise our hearts and minds to Him if He did not give us the ability to do so, for He is the Source of all goodness.

I really like hearing your experiences. I am not looking for an absolute answer about my experiences. I wanted to share what happened and connect with others that may have had similar sort of things happen.
It has been very consoling for me to have had those experiences. For me, to have comfort from those dreams is completely a reminder of God in my life. Definitely, I am thanking God for them. Also, I like the idea of talking to my priest about it some. It is not a huge deal, but is a point of interest to me.
Thanks for sharing!!!

If you wake praying it would seem to me that God’s Spirit is active in you and that your spirit is very open to Him.

I can relate to this as sometimes I dream Im praying the Rosary. I wake up holding my Rosary.

Be Thou my vision of Lord of my heart.
Be all else but not to me save that Thou art.
Be thou my best thought the day and the night.
Both waking and sleeping Thy presence my light.

This happens to me and gives me great joy. I love to wake from my sleep with my prayers and hymns going through my mind and my soul. This is also why I am careful what I fill my mind with. I don’t want 50’s doo wap music going though my head all day and night. I would rather have prayer and hymns. Pray without ceasing as much as possible, and waking with God is very common, but never less joyful.

I so agree with you about being careful what I listen to. Now,that I wake with prayers, I extra see the value of discipline when it comes to what I watch and what I hear. It is amazing, when you filter out the world’s noise, how sweeter God appears and how much easier to see the contrast of this world and God’s world.I am glad you brought this point up.

I almost always fall asleep praying. Sometimes I will wake up from a nightmare, and immediately start praying again. It helps take the nightmare away, and helps me to go back to sleep.

I pray during bad dreams often. Once my wife woke me up because I was singing the Divine Mercy Chaplet out loud while dreaming. Tim

I don’t wake up praying, but I often wake up with songs from the mass in my head. Most often, it’s the Gloria or Lamb of God. It’s a great way to start the day.

“wings” I have had this experience, too. I would wake up, praying the “Hail Mary”. It mostly happened during the time of my conversion and return to the Church; it has more or less stopped now.

Looking back on it… I consider it a special “gift”… that Our Lady was watching over me… during a time, when I had drifted away from the Catholic Church. She was tending to my needs. And I am extremely grateful to Her.

She is the MOST wonderful Mother to us!

God bless you.

I too have found myself praying upon waking. I don’t know why I would do this (maybe from having engaged in a lot of prayer and adoration), but it was always a peaceful experience for me.🙂

I am so glad I brought this up,because it is very fasinating to hear all of your experiences. It gives me a sense of real family, as we are watched over by Our Mother Mary and our Father God. I am looking forward to heaing from more people. I hope God brings more to this thread. God is so wonderful and touches each of us so personally, even in our dreams.
WOW, that would be neat to wake up singing praises to God.God and Blessed Mother are so good to us.

I would love to wake up from a nightmare saying prayers. If I could pray inside my dreams maybe they would never be bad. As it is, I wake from a nightmare first and afterwards start praying, usually Hail Marys.

When I cannot sleep at night, I remember a phrase of my father’s, “keeping the night watch”, keeping the night watch with God and His angels and His saints. Sometimes I consider it a call to pray for one of God’s intentions so I start saying a rosary.

I find prayers to be something of a comforting place to be, especially at night when I am alone or scared from bad dreams.

It is good to read these responses and to know I am in good company.

I believe it is a call to pray at night when you can’t sleep. I get nightmare sometimes, but sometimes I wake up praying. I think it is wonderful you are saying the rosary.

I so appreciate this thread and have waited a long time for it. I fall asleep every night saying the rosary and the prayers go on all through the night, each time I wake up. I usually manage not to lose my beads. Then sometimes in the very early morning when I am almost awake but not quite, I get to listen in to myself talking to God and it’s like a prayer from the depths of my soul, apart from the rest of me, as I am when awake. The words I hear then are so bare-bones honest, it’s amazing as I would never know how to express myself so openly on my own.
